Meet the ED — Shelley Cootes, Penrith Lakes parkrun
Scott crosses to a phone interview with Shelley Cootes, founding ED of Penrith Lakes parkrun (Sydney International Regatta Centre), prompted by Brendan Davies naming it his favourite parkrun a few weeks earlier. Covers the event's group of deaf/hearing-impaired parkrunners and Auslan interpreter volunteers, its three alternate courses (lap of the lake, the Southern Bank up-and-back, and a two-lap cross-country course), the March access-gate/car-park crisis that nearly closed the event and the community, media and council campaign that saved it, the resulting push for a second Penrith parkrun, and her own parkrun history (77 volunteer credits, 50th run planned for Penrith's 100th event on 30 July).
Guest interview — The Run Beyond Project (David Criniti and Amanda Shannon)
The episode's title interview. Dave Criniti explains how the Run Beyond Project grew out of a Helmsman Project sailing trip and started at Chester Hill High School, using running as a medium to teach goal setting, commitment and resilience; Amanda Shannon describes running the program with a group of girls at Evans High School in Western Sydney. They discuss student selection, training loads, the students' diverse backgrounds, the Tasmania half marathon trip, and how Rhodes and The Ponds parkruns have become the program's interim races and welcomed the kids.
Social Adventurers
Instagram then Facebook round-up of listener posts: Tanya RR's 40-second/40-sounds Singapore parkrun video; _PK at Mount Barker parkrun again; the Dirty Cheaters on tour at Curl Curl and Hobart plus a 100-run milestone; Expat Runner at Kilkenny; Ben Brockman's barcode-less fifth parkrun at Greenwich; Hey TJ's reverse-parkrun freedom run at Jells; Macgirl19 at Torrens; Oz Twin Mama park-walking Broadbeach Waters; Alan Connolly volunteering at Cobram; Brendan's parkrun-tree ankle tattoo; and Tim Oberg asking for GPS help.
parkrun adventure challenge — reverse freedom run
Trailed rather than aired: the hosts note Hey TJ completed the reverse parkrun challenge at Jells and say the listener-submitted reverse freedom run audio will be shared next week, giving people an extra week to catch up and take part.
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Cued by Scott's "Do we have any cake this week or do we have any launches this week?" Launches at Renmark parkrun (South Australia) and Meadowbrook parkrun (Queensland), followed by anniversaries: Noosa's second, celebrated onesie-style, and Armadale's second with a best-or-worst-headwear theme — which turns into a running gag about Sunshine Coast cold and Scott's alleged sombrero collection.
