Mark Arbib
Nitro Athletics, the new fast-format, teams-based athletics competition (six teams, three nights, Usain Bolt's All-Stars, mixed relays, the three-minute run, elimination mile, mic'd-up dugouts), the case for it against critics calling it a gimmick, and then the Athletics Australia partnership with parkrun: parkrun as "the recreational gateway to the sport of athletics", insurance and promotion support, and Arbib's argument that government should recognise and fund parkrun as public health. Closes on his own parkrunning at St Peters.
Davina Harvey
Surfers Paradise parkrun's first anniversary, the fluoro theme, cake, and three 50th and one 100th milestone on the day; why a Gold Coast event averages only 30-35 runners with three parkruns close together; the merits of its three-lap shaded riverside course; and her own parkrun story, starting at Main Beach in 2012, driving 25 minutes to Coomera, and being talked into starting her own event.
Raelene Joyce
Club Corner: how Raring2Run started in September 2014 with six mentors and 12 members after Raelene's own weight loss and learn-to-run journey at Berwick Springs parkrun, and grew to 118 women; why they are women-only and bright pink; how they "recruit to parkrun rather than from it", using parkrun as a tempo run with a "pre-parky" and "post-parky" around it during event campaigns; the ethos of "finish lines, not finish times"; and member stories including an MS nurse bringing three patients along and stateswoman Michaela Curtin.
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:12
Scott Trickett hosting with Melissa Erbacher. Scott asks whether Mel has done her homework from last week, studying up on cricket so they can impress Bruce next time he is on and when they go on tour; Bruce is not back this episode, and Mel argues the cricket season is only just starting so she has plenty of time, and Scott gives her a few more weeks.
parkrun news bulletin starts at 1:29
Scott hands over "Should we listen to some news?" The bulletin covers minus 31 degrees on parkrun day in Russia (Moscow a comparatively tropical 2.5 degrees), the inaugural IAU 24-hour Asia and Oceania Championship in Kaohsiung with Australian parkrunners John Pearson (Noosa), Nikki Wind (Berwick Springs) and Sharon Schultz (Wangaratta) on the podium, the City to Sea 15k in Melbourne, and parkrun events worldwide taking part in the Mannequin Challenge.
Social Adventurers starts at 43:49
Mel opens with "We haven't been social adventuring for a few weeks, so let's stop in and see what's going on on the social media." Twitter love from Paul Kitchen [Kitching] and Scotty Watkins; Lyndell [Lyndell] Murray correcting Scott on pink cricket balls for day-night tests; Mildred Labashang's hashtags; Instagram from Running Guy Ryan at Nambour's first anniversary; Facebook from Tim Baldwin (Lismore ED Belinda Smith chasing runners down with a 50th-run photo card), Heather Hunter, Tim McKinley and Sheridan Law.
Strava Club update starts at 46:13
Mel asks "How are we doing on Strava, Scotty?", the club is up to 259 members with "lots and lots" of running, boosted by members doing ultras. Mel wonders whether triathlon-season cycling and swimming activities also show on the club leaderboard; Scott isn't sure and promises to do his homework.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 51:26"Where is the cake?"
Two launches this week, both in New South Wales, Kame/Kamei [Kamay] and Forster. Cake at Surfers Paradise, Queensland (1st anniversary), Cronulla, NSW (1st), The Beaches, NSW (2nd), Minipi [Minnippi], Queensland (3rd) and Sandgate, Queensland (4th). Mel teases Scott that Victoria gets neither launches nor cake this weekend, "not even doughnuts".
Club Corner starts at 52:49
Scott hands over "Our Club Corner comes from Victoria this week." Raelene Joyce on Raring2Run, the bright-pink "Pink Army", founded September 2014 out of Berwick Springs parkrun after her own weight-loss and running transformation, now 118 women-only members. They "recruit to parkrun rather than from it", use parkrun as a tempo run inside event campaigns with a "pre-parky" and "post-parky", and focus on "finish lines, not finish times". Stories include an MS nurse, Michelle, bringing three of her patients along, roughly 50 half marathoners, two ultra runners, and stateswoman Michaela Curtin.
Sign-off starts at 1:00:36
Scotty marked 46 episodes down and the end of the year approaching, saying they were going to make it to episode 50, and Mel noted they would have to change the logo back to red in time for Christmas. Scotty then asked listeners for iTunes reviews and five-star ratings, saying he did not care if the comments called their banter a waste of time as long as a review went in, and they said goodbye to each other.
