Welcome starts at 0:08
First episode of 2017 with Scott Trickett and Melissa Erbacher, opening with a mock rebrand as the "fiddle adventurers" because Mel has just spent five days at Sunshine Fiddle Camp on the cello. Scott ran Westerfolds on Christmas Day in a full Santa suit, then on New Year's Day handed out finish tokens at a record Westerfolds (220-odd) before running Mullum Mullum, which he rates highly. Mel did a rain-soaked Christmas Day at Cleveland with her sister-in-law and niece while her nephew ran the whole 5k for the first time, then a New Year's Day double at Chermside and Kedron with family and Sunshine Coast parkrunners, walk-running both with Gareth Saunders, who is coming back from injury.
parkrun news bulletin starts at 18:48
Scott and Mel read the global weekly numbers over music: 15,830 volunteers at 1,013 locations, 183,866 participants including 30,139 first-timers, 36,850 registrations in seven days, and parkrun Australia's 400,000th registered parkrunner. Also 22 events cancelled worldwide for weather (flooding in Australia and South Africa; ice and extreme cold in the UK, Poland, France, Canada and Russia, with Moscow at -31), and the birth of a child to Gareth Saunders and his wife Mel.
Meet the ED starts at 23:27
Extended studio interview with Liv Coop, Event Director of both Cleveland and Sirromet parkrun, billed as "our first return ED guest", she opened episode one of the podcast. Covers running two events at once, the trail-vs-road contrast at Sirromet, the winery/cellar-door setting, the Australian attendance record attempt, her parkrun tree tattoo for her 100th run, and handing Sirromet over to Ellie. The segment is not given a name on air in this episode.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 38:23
Mel hands over to the returning roving reports "We've got Paul Kitching having some New Year's Day doubles and Monique and Jeff who had some adventures in the UK. Let's have a listen to what they've got to say." Hosts return to encourage listeners to send more in, "That's a New Year's resolution for all of you. Do some roving reports for us."
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 38:39
PK's New Year's Day double from the Adelaide Hills, Mount Barker at 7am then Strathalbyn at 9am, with interviews of first-timer Jed Richards, Mount Barker regular Scott Veers (on his 102nd), Kent Baraglia (who ran the 21km between the two events), and parkrun Australia board chair Scott Watkins. Opens "this is underscore PK or PK, your Channel 4 reporter, hopefully not the only one this year."
Launches and anniversaries starts at 50:48"Where is the cake?"
Launches at Tannum Sands (Queensland, near Gladstone) and Quinns Rocks (WA) last weekend, plus Wondai launching this week with Mel attending. Anniversaries: Lawson's second; this week Pioneer (WA) third, Shepparton (Victoria) third, and Sirromet's first, tied to the record attempt.
Sign-off starts at 53:13
The hosts marked reaching episode 51, joking that they had not been sure they would come back and that, having met the goal of beating Robbo and Russ, they could technically retire after this episode, but committed to another whole year and asked listeners for guest ideas. They signed off wishing each other happy parkrunning for the week.
