Scott crosses over at [00:08:23] "it's time to chat to one of our EDs who didn't get to run on the weekend, but she's got a damn good excuse." Leanne Paul, Event Director of Bowen parkrun in north Queensland, describes the state of her coastal course after Cyclone Debbie — storm surge washout, fallen fig trees, "the coconuts that were missiles" — the town's recovery, how Bowen parkrun started (she discovered parkrun at Riverway while living on Magnetic Island), and why she won't reopen until the course is safe.
Roving Adventurers (roving reporter crossovers)
Lyndell Murray's self-contained roving report from New Plymouth, New Zealand, standing under the Wind Wand. She attempts a pop-up parkrun on the coastal walkway, nobody joins her, and she interviews passers-by — Peter (a local walker who has never heard of parkrun), an unnamed visiting parkrunner from Whangarei, Tom from Christchurch (who suggests she "go up to Pukekura Park and run around there"), and Dawn, a local walker — failing to solve "the mystery of why New Plymouth doesn't have a parkrun."
Channel 5 News Crew — Lyndell Murray
RENAMED ON AIR THIS EPISODE. After Lyndell's report Scott says at [00:53:14] "I think she's made a strong case to be the second member of our Channel 4 news crew that I want to rename the Channel 5 news crew because we're just that one better than the other one", and Melissa confirms at [00:53:29] "So from here on in, we shall be known as the Channel 5 news crew." Lyndell Murray is inducted as the second member — [00:53:38] "I don't think she needs to earn any more stars. I think that got her over the line." The show notes flag it too: "the Channel 5 News Crew inducts a new member!"
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
One launch after several quiet weeks — George Town in Tasmania, taking Tasmania to four events, with Melissa tipping Tasmania as "the state to watch". Anniversaries: Lismore misses out again (still cancelled after flooding), Main Beach celebrates after last week's cancellation, Fingal Bay turns four, and Warragul in Victoria turns two.
Strava Club update
Scott reads back answers to the club's question "your dream parkrun location — where do we need a new parkrun?" Nominations include TOC's surf coast / Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Melissa Ellis' Bonny Doon (over Lake Eildon), the Flinders Ranges, and Ross going international with Central Park in New York and the Tiergarten in Berlin. It rolls straight into the Medibank competition to fly a listener to an existing Australian parkrun of their choice.
