Show notes
The parkrun adventurers are counting down the days until the inaugural parkrun adventurers listener meet-up and share our fave road-trip games to get the party started! Olympian, Commonwealth Games athlete and parkrun Australia record holder Liam Adams takes some time out from altitude training to give us an insight into the inner workings of an elite athlete in the lead up to Gold Coast 2018. Plus Channel 5 News Crew member Lyndell is back with a roving report from the launch of Forest Lake (opens in a new tab) parkrun.

Altitude training at Falls Creek and the taper into the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games marathon: his parkrun Australia record at Maribyrnong, VO2 max and restricted lung function, weekly mileage and taper strategy, balancing 50-60 hour work weeks with elite training, the lack of funding for home-Games preparation, podium hopes, his childhood asthma and hay fever, and his pre-race routine of leaving a snack beside the bed.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:14
Mel and Scotty on the final episode before the listener meet-up at Shellharbour: Scotty is nervous for the first time, the only previous in-person recording was episode 12 in a Melbourne studio, the sound gear is untested and there is no wet-weather plan. They chat road-trip games (Spotto, the alphabet game) and car music, from Kasia's My Little Pony albums and Kanye to Mel's Disney singalongs and Tarzan in Italian, before introducing guest Liam Adams and asking whether Mel has Commonwealth Games fever for her home state.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 41:53
Lyndell Murray's self-contained roving report from the launch of Forest Lake parkrun in south-west Brisbane on St Patrick's Day. She interviews Bobby (a visiting alphabeteer from Springwood), Schulze (Statesmen update), Sue (celebrating her 100th parkrun in a green tutu) and Event Directors Rory and Shirley, then wraps with a shout-out to Craig, a Run Director at Rocks Riverside. 559 finishers on launch day.
Statesmen update starts at 43:17
Nested inside Lyndell's roving report, she flags it explicitly: "It's a parkrun launch in Queensland. It's time for a Statesman update." Schulze reports there is currently no statesman in Queensland (he missed Plantation and Cardwell), that Forest Lake is Queensland's 85th event with Cardwell making 86, and that he plans a trip to Mount Isa to close the gap.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 53:23"Where is the cake?"
Scott and Mel run through the week's launches and anniversaries: Forest Lake launched on the weekend, St Lucia launches this weekend in Brisbane, Chipping Norton launches in New South Wales, and a bittersweet anniversary at Mount Barker in South Australia, which Channel 5 News Crew members PK and Greta are attending instead of the listener meet-up.
Run the date my way starts at 58:23challenge check-in
Scott asks Mel for a progress update on her "Run the date my way" March challenge (running the date in minutes each day). She has completed day 21 without missing a day, has ten days to go, and is not yet halfway through the total minutes. Not clearly a formal show segment, it reads as a recurring check-in on the co-host's personal challenge, named on air by Scott.
Sign-off starts at 1:03:03
Mel said that as she would see Scott in a couple of days they should finish up, and Scott replied that she had not eased his anxiety about the listener meet-up one bit. They then argued about whether the episode was the penultimate one before the meet-up weekend, agreed they were on the same dictionary, and signed off saying they would see each other soon.
