Rob de Castella
The origins and growth of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation/Project - the 2010 documentary that started it, the four original runners taken to the New York Marathon, the shift from finding an elite athlete to building pride and leadership; the current intake of 12 (six men, six women, aged 18-30) screened by graduate Adrian Dodson-Shaw; graduate outcomes including Zibeon Fielding and Charlie Maher; the Social Ventures Australia 6.6-fold social return finding; the Warrior Run and its partnership with parkrun; and his own family and children. Scott closes at [00:38:16] noting they never got to Rob's running history and asks him back.
Roving reports
In this episode
Roving Adventurers (roving reporter crossovers)
Scott introduces the week's roving reports at [00:38:50] with an apology for having missed Scott Watkins's Weipa material sent weeks earlier. Three reports follow: Scott Watkins from Weipa parkrun (Far North Queensland), then Melissa Ellis and Tony O'Connell both from the Wimmera River parkrun launch in Horsham, Victoria.
Channel 5 News Crew
Melissa Ellis reports from the Wimmera River parkrun launch in Horsham, interviewing co-Event Director Candy about how the event came together (seeded by Andrea Draper), the out-and-back course over the Centenary Footbridge, the 200-plus turnout and community backing from the East Rotary Club and local cafes. Scott confirms at [00:59:53] that both Horsham reports were Channel 5 News Crew items, and at [01:00:10] Mel notes the crew needs reviving in the other states.
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Scott and Mel alternate through the weekend's anniversaries: Blue Gum Hills, Inverell and Wagga (NSW), Broadbeach Waters, [Capalaba], Warner Lakes and Warwick (QLD), Lochiel (SA), Newport Lakes (VIC). Scott's own Eastern Gardens launch in Geelong - the 40th event under the Medibank Free + Active partnership, with Channel 7 Sunrise crossing live - is covered at the top of the show instead.
Streaky September
Mel runs through the rules as a refresher: run or walk a minimum of 2km every single day in September, honour system, parkrun counts, a Strava event on the parkrun Adventurers club and the hashtag StreakySeptember for shout-outs. Optional add-on of giving up a vice - Mel gives up chocolate, lollies and wine, Scott gives up coffee. Shout-outs to listener Amanda of Westerfolds, still streaking a full year on from last September, and to Carolyn, dubbed the "Streaky September Ambassador" for recruiting participants unprompted.
