Rob de Castella
The origins and growth of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation/Project - the 2010 documentary that started it, the four original runners taken to the New York Marathon, the shift from finding an elite athlete to building pride and leadership; the current intake of 12 (six men, six women-30) screened by graduate Adrian Dodson-Shaw; graduate outcomes including Zibeon Fielding and Charlie Maher; the Social Ventures Australia 6.6-fold social return finding; the Warrior Run and its partnership with parkrun; and his own family and children. Scott closes noting they never got to Rob's running history and asks him back.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:15
Scott Trickett and Melissa Erbacher. Scott worked the launch of Eastern Gardens parkrun in Geelong, the 40th event under Medibank's Free and Active initiative, with Channel 7 Sunrise live crosses, free coffee, massages and a footy-style banner, but didn't run so still hasn't got his E for the alphabet challenge; he walked part of the bat-lined course with Kasia. They discuss the Running Challenges Chrome extension, the Wilson Index and its Compass Club correction, Scott's failed August Freedom Challenge and the imminent Streaky September, before introducing their most requested perlustration guest, Rob de Castella.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 38:50
Scott introduces the week's roving reports with an apology for having missed Scott Watkins's Weipa material sent weeks earlier. Three reports follow: Scott Watkins from Weipa parkrun (Far North Queensland), then Melissa Ellis and Tony O'Connell both from the Wimmera River parkrun launch in Horsham, Victoria.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 53:49
Melissa Ellis reports from the Wimmera River parkrun launch in Horsham, interviewing Co-Event Director Candy about how the event came together (seeded by Andrea Draper), the out-and-back course over the Centenary Footbridge, the 200-plus turnout and community backing from the East Rotary Club and local cafes. Scott confirms that both Horsham reports were Channel 5 News Crew items, and Mel notes the crew needs reviving in the other states.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 1:00:50"Where is the cake?"
Scott and Mel alternate through the weekend's anniversaries: Blue Gum Hills, Inverell and Wagga (NSW), Broadbeach Waters, [Capalaba], Warner Lakes and Warwick (QLD), Lochiel (SA), Newport Lakes (VIC). Scott's own Eastern Gardens launch in Geelong - the 40th event under the Medibank Free + Active partnership, with Channel 7 Sunrise crossing live - is covered at the top of the show instead.
Streaky September starts at 1:01:30
Mel runs through the rules as a refresher: run or walk a minimum of 2km every single day in September, honour system, parkrun counts, a Strava event on the parkrun Adventurers Club and the hashtag StreakySeptember for shout-outs. Optional add-on of giving up a vice - Mel gives up chocolate, lollies and wine, Scott gives up coffee. Shout-outs to listener Amanda of Westerfolds, still streaking a full year on from last September, and to Carolyn, dubbed the "Streaky September Ambassador" for recruiting participants unprompted.
Sign-off starts at 1:08:13
Scott said that was it for another episode and asked Mel's plans: she was volunteering at parkrun that Saturday rather than running, would check her PO box for her medal that afternoon, and said her adventuring had stalled but flights were booked and road trips arranged because she still needed about nine new events by the end of the year to meet her New Year's goal. After Scott lamented not being able to do a sing-along, he said he had a hot tip that playing a recording of a live performance would slip past the copyright algorithms, and said he would give it a try; Mel said she would speak to him next week.
