Welcome starts at 0:16
Mel Erbacher and Scotty Trickett, with Scotty nervous because Mel visited his home Westerfolds on Saturday: he collected her from her Swanston Street hotel having left his phone at home, with a car seat lent by Chris, and she pushed Wes round in a brakeless travel pram, finding many more hills than the promised one. They compare Kawana asking volunteers to arrive 30 minutes early and fully using the app with Westerfolds' later arrivals and partial app use (Yvonne and Kasia scanning), swap wildlife stories of lorikeets, kangaroos, a dead wombat, kookaburras and Scotty's birdbath magpies, and Buster the dog interrupts the recording; Mel refuses a score out of ten, says Westerfolds did not crack her top three, and reckons she recruited four new participants.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 17:48
Three Channel 5 News Crew roving crossovers in one episode. Lyndell Murray at Yarrabilba parkrun (SW of Brisbane) interviews the Leo Wanker Academy of Fitness running club (Andrew, Aaron, Paul, Jason), a visiting granddaughter Jess from London surprising her grandmother Vivian, RD Spencer, and 50-time volunteer Rick Rosenblatt; she also ticks off her Y in the alphabet challenge. Tony O'Connell (TOC) reports from Urunga parkrun on the NSW mid-north coast as an "honorary New South Wales reporter", interviewing ED Nathan, and is congratulated in studio for completing the Aussie Alphabeteer. Gary Murphy checks in from Highlands parkrun with junior parkrunner Zoe Ellis, who has just completed her Statesman, christened on air the "State's Kid's Ship".
Launches and anniversaries starts at 33:47"Where is the cake?"
Calendar run mid-pod rather than at the top this week. No launches at all, and none left for the rest of the year, which the hosts frame as a breather before the silly season. Anniversaries: Mullum Mullum in Victoria turning two (prompting a tangent about ED Scott Hawkins' pre-run brief and Scott planning to revisit and re-critique it), and Reynella East in South Australia. Also a reminder that the Australian Christmas compendium locks down on 13 December, plus the hosts' own Christmas Day and New Year's Day double plans.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 40:08
Debut roving report from Mark Scarborough of Canberra (home run Gungahlin), who adventured to Braidwood Showground parkrun in country NSW to tick off his NENDY (nearest event not done yet) and complete the Staying Alive Challenge. He interviews founder/RD Kelly, junior volunteer Scarlett, fast Queanbeyan runner Bernardo and RD Joel. Set up by Scott after another failed call-out for NSW roving reporters, and closed with "a great debut from Mark".
Top three Christmas gifts for parkrunners starts at 1:01:51
Ad hoc listicle proposed by Scott. (1) parkrun ID key tag or wristband, including new circular key tags in the new parkrun branding, and Scott's complaint that his UK-bought purple wristband scans badly in Australia; (2) Tony Park's novel Scent of Fear, about anti-poaching dog squads in South Africa, following the authors' interview a few weeks earlier; (3) travel to the Newcastle listener meetup the first weekend of April 2019, flights, accommodation, or simply "permission to attend".
Sign-off starts at 1:06:02
Scott turned from the top three Christmas gifts segment to thanking Mel for travelling all over Australia and for her visit to town, and for the evening spent with the showman; they bantered about whether Mel was his best friend in Queensland and about his "equal best friends", and Scott teased a top three best friends list for next week's pod as a hook to get listeners back before signing off with "Speak to you then" and a double "Ciao".
