What the parkrun Global Research Board does, how research priorities are set and applications reviewed, her PhD background working with severely obese teenagers, and how volunteering at parkrun helped her through a badly broken ankle when she could no longer run.

Welcome starts at 0:01
Scott Trickett with Mel Erbacher, who defied her obstetrician, yoga instructor and co-host by turning up one more week. Scott returned to Berwick Springs after six years to celebrate Medibank parkrun hero Tim (buffs all round) and Michael's 250th, but was unwell by juniors on Sunday and ended up in ER for tests that found nothing definite, so his running is on hold. Mel stayed near her hospital and did the first-timers briefing at Kawana, which leads into a chat about the new first-timers briefing and pre-event course check volunteer roles.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 33:59
Gary Murphy files a roving report from Lancefield parkrun's first anniversary in Victoria, where the theme is superheroes. He interviews Event Director Erin about the first 12 months, the volunteer culture and the megafauna fossils found on course; Run Director Alison; "Duffman" Brendan; photographer John Nightingale; a group of women in the finish-line crowd; and cake-baker/Run Director Nadine alongside parkrunner-of-the-year Bryce, who supplies the course description (three laps, flat, granitic sand).
Launches and anniversaries starts at 46:24"Where is the cake?"
Scott and Mel cover the upcoming launch of [Whitemark] Wharf parkrun on Flinders Island, Tasmania, noting listener confusion about how hard it is to reach ("you can just catch a ferry across"), and run through the week's anniversaries: Cobar (NSW), Coburg (Vic), Euroa (Vic), Jubilee Way (SA), Portland (Vic), Roma (Qld), Taree (NSW) and Varsity Lakes (Qld), the last of which is where Scott set his parkrun PB.
Sign-off starts at 49:52
Scott called the wrap on 156 and immediately gave away the cliffhanger himself - next week's State of the Nation, speaking to ambassadors around the country plus Malaysia for a lowdown on new events, special events and anniversaries, and still hunting the elusive X parkrun. Mel thanked him for dragging himself out of bed to record while unwell, said she appreciated his dedication and would remember it when deciding whether she could podcast straight after delivering, and Scott said he looked forward to it and would speak to her next week.
