Well, how about this year so far huh? 2020: Defying expectations since January 1st.
Our latest ep of the pod is out! We recorded it live a bit over a week ago, and hope it comes as a welcome reprieve from less happy things.
Now, the recorded live part and its associated tech requirements did provide some additional 'learning opportunities' in the editing suite. Thank you for being so patient while we navigated these, and for your understanding that the audio quality is proper, authentically 'real-life'. Fun was had regardless!
Episode 196 is for all our adventurers feeling all the feelings that come with the unprecedented cancellations of so many parkruns worldwide. We are here for you, and we are with you.
Escape for a while right here:

Paul Butler
Live on-stage interview with the host event's ED: a year in the role after taking over from Greta, the nine-strong event team and volunteer culture, Mount Barker's upcoming sixth anniversary, and his and son Charlie's parkrun photography which supplies an outsized share of parkrun Australia's national channels.
Dave
Live on-stage interview in the Channel 5 News Crew round: how he joined, Melissa Erbacher asked him while he was visiting an event and he had a go at a recording, and his cheerful inability to remember either his first or his most recent roving report.
Lyndell Murray
Live on-stage interview in the Channel 5 News Crew round, asked where her first roving report was. The answer overlaps with the host's own across a shared diarizer label, so what each of them said is not separable here.
Grette Wilkinson
Live interview within the Channel 5 News Crew segment: how PK's cafe interview first got her on the podcast and inspired her to start reporting, the nerves of being interviewed in front of a live audience, and her next target, Yeldulknie Weir parkrun at Cleve on the Eyre Peninsula.
Melissa Ellis
Live on-stage interview in the Channel 5 News Crew round: the long drive to Mount Barker, co-hosting the show from Puckapunyal and the four PALMs she missed while posted there, the running tracks at Puckapunyal, and the crew member who took pity on her and got her to Kerang Regional.
Paul Kitching
Live on-stage interview in the Channel 5 News Crew round: the highlight of the day (Mel's pineapple tights), thanks to TOC and David Jocks for the audio gear, his next adventure at Goolwa parkrun, pride in how far the crew has grown, and a pasty-versus-pastie referendum put to the room.
Tony O'Connell
Live on-stage interview in the Channel 5 News Crew round, and the last of them: his third PALM, an airline mishap on the way over, and what he likes most about the crew, walking up to strangers at a parkrun and introducing himself as Channel 5 News. He then calls Em up as a surprise guest, and closes the segment with advice for any listener thinking of filing a report of their own.
Em
Short surprise appearance: Em is called up unannounced to present Mel with a gift of pineapple chocolate from the group, and gives a brief report on how Shellharbour parkrun is going (windy week, attendance needs a boost).

Welcome starts at 0:21
Live #palm20 listener meetup recorded at Mount Barker parkrun, Melissa Erbacher hosting solo until she pulls Scott Trickett up from the audience as co-host, sharing one working mic. Mel acknowledges the Peramangk people as traditional owners, the first acknowledgement of country at a podcast meetup. Scotty recalls getting lost on an earlier Freedom Run of the out-and-back course and praises the finish-line atmosphere; Mel ran with Emmett in the pram after Adam and the boys slept in and a confused Queensland-to-South Australia time change, with photographer Paul Butler on course, before the Event Directors are called up.
Meet the ED starts at 7:19
Mount Barker parkrun Event Director Paul Butler is called up on stage and interviewed live by Melissa Erbacher and Scott Trickett. Covers his year in the ED role (he took over from Greta when she moved on), the nine-person event team, Mount Barker's community, and his and his son Charlie's parkrun photography, which is heavily over-represented on parkrun's national channels. He notes Mount Barker's sixth anniversary falls on the 28th.
Meet the ED — Scott Trickett starts at 13:21
The annual PALM listener meet-up quiz, third running. Questions written in advance by Simon Mackley, who could not travel, and delivered live by Melissa Ellis as guest quizmaster ("Welcome to Madness for 2020 at Mount Barker"). Four contestants on buzzers: two-time defending champion Brendan Peel, Schultzy, Janet and Scott Trickett; TOC keeps score. Fifteen parkrun trivia questions. Scott Trickett wins on five points and takes the pineapple; Schultzy four, Brendan and Janet three and a half each. Consolation DVDs and books for everyone, including a copy of Turia Pitt's Unmasked signed "to parkrun adventurers, anything is possible".
The Channel 5 News crew starts at 34:27
Live on-stage gathering of the Channel 5 News crew, the show's roving reporters. PK and Greta Wilkinson are presented with the official press passes they missed out on last year, then all six crew members present (Dave, Lyndell Murray, Greta Wilkinson, Melissa Ellis, Paul Kitching and Tony O'Connell) are interviewed in turn about how they joined, their first roving report and their next planned adventure. Redoes a bit attempted at the previous meet-up that was not recorded properly. TOC closes with advice for listeners thinking about filing their own report.
Sign-off starts at 50:16
At the live palm20 recording Mel thanked TOC, called for a round of applause for the crew and said that pretty much wrapped up the podcast portion of the palm20 weekend, then read out a written list of thanks: the organising crew of Chris Fraser, Paul Kitching, Grette Wilkinson and Paul Butler, who had found the dinner locations, scheduled the freedom runs and the morning's recording and arranged the AV gear, taking over from Gary Murphy who could not make it this year; Simon Mackley for writing the quiz questions and Melissa Ellis for delivering them; TOC for scoring, which she suspected he had skewed in Scotty's favour; Paul Butler for being a surprise guest; the whole Channel 5 News crew who had co-hosted over the previous six months; and Tracy and Jackie for holding on to Emmett and keeping him from crying through the recording. She then realised they had never introduced the episode, welcomed the audience to episode 196, and said she would now awkwardly press stop.
