the Obi Award — Sam Schroder starts at 54:26
Sarah has the Obi envelope, express-posted to her in Perth because she is hosting from the west. This week's Obi goes to The Office Lady, Sam Schroder, for a double achievement in one morning - joining the Cow Club at Mosman and getting her last stopwatch number for bingo out of 194 parkruns. "A long time in the making."
the Birthday Boy starts at 55:17
The June 2024 anniversary rundown: 35 Australian events with anniversaries, one of them the Thorndon junior parkrun in South Australia turning four; five parkrun days in June; Newy in Newcastle turning 12; no first birthdays and a single second, Kirkdale Reserve; "the so-known prettiest parkrun in Australia" turning seven mid-month; and in the rare fifth week, Charleys Creek turning five and Logan River turning 11, with the usual plug for the event map and the cancellations page.
Consolidated Club Report starts at 58:17
For Saturday 18 May: 640 club members, 456 of whom took part in nine countries across 240 locations. Internationally, 42 UK events, seven in South Africa, five in the Netherlands, two in the USA and one each in Germany, Italy and Ireland. Locally 52 events in NSW, 41 in Victoria, 39 in Queensland, 14 in SA, 12 in WA, eight in Tasmania, five each in the North Island and the ACT, three in the NT and two in the South Island. Largest international frond was 12 at Zuiderpark Den Haag; largest Australian fronds were seven at Jeune Park and six at Canning River; nobody made the pilgrimage to Bushy this week.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 1:00:31"Where is the cake?"
Four launches, none of them in Australia: Fort Road parkrun in Rochester, Kent - a closed-facility event at a male young offenders institution founded in 1874 - with six volunteers and 23 finishers; Fulwell Quarry near Sunderland, a two-lap multi-terrain course with 159 finishers, seven first-timers and 18 volunteers; Veterans Park in Trenton, New Jersey, the USA's 79th event, with 41 finishers including 11 first-time-ever participants and seven volunteers; and a one-lap city-forest event in Poland between Warsaw and Gdansk with 131 participants, 13 volunteers and 63 first-timers.
Sign-off starts at 1:03:32
Simon asked where Sarah was going next parkrun day; she said she was heading east then north to Fingal Bay parkrun, that she had spotted an adventurer in the results, Fiona Mullen, and would be wearing her adventurers shirt if Fiona wanted to say hi, though she was not looking forward to the cold. Simon said he was doing something epic - finishing his alphabet at Zillmere, also completing all the Brisbane city events, and celebrating an unofficial Dirty Cheater Day - with his friend Dorota coming up from Sydney to finish her alphabet with him. After noting they had not once said 'Voldemort parkrun', Simon gave the Facebook and email contacts, said 'that's it for another week', and thanked Sarah for joining him.
Club Corner starts at 1:05:37
A short post-outro addendum to Club Corner number 34, the Compass Club edition: the contributor corrects themselves, having missed that Australia got a new westernmost point when Baxter opened in WA in December 2022. Marina was only correct between September 2019 and December 2022. As of early 2024 the compass points are Nightcliff in the north, Geeveston in the south, Kingscliff in the east and Baxter in the west.
