In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:08
Scott Trickett and Melissa Erbacher, on Lunar New Year, look back over the first five episodes and talk about Zoolander 2 opening that week, which both are seeing with their running clubs: Mel's Derek Zoolander Centre for Kids Who Can't Run Good on the Sunshine Coast and Scott's Westerfoldians. From there it is all-time favourite films (Scott's Jerry Maguire, Mo' Better Blues and Wildcats against Mel's Princess Bride, Ferris Bueller, Clueless, Star Wars and Aliens), six degrees of Keanu Reeves, and Scott's wish for more running clubs named like the Hogwarts running club he has seen in Melbourne.
parkrun adventure challenge starts at 13:40listener challenge
Melissa Erbacher hands over "I think you're putting the challenge out there now, Scotty", and Scott sets the week's listener challenge: "create your own running club based on your favourite movie". Grows out of the episode-long movie theme and the hosts' own film-named clubs, Mel's Derek Zoolander Centre for Kids Who Can't Run Good and Scott's Westerfoldians.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 13:49
Melissa crosses to the field "we had a roving adventurer out there who asked some of our parkrunners what their favourite movie or movie line was". Adam files a short vox-pop from Town of Seaside parkrun with three interviewees, Jerry Taylor (Star Wars / "You don't know the power of the dark side"), Mark (Shaun of the Dead / an Arnold Schwarzenegger "I'll be back"), and Mackenzie (Peppa Pig / "jumping up and down in muddy puddles"). Scott jokes on the return that "the award for our cutest parkrun adventurer so far goes to Mackenzie".
Meet the ED starts at 15:28
Scott introduces Darwin Event Director Mark Connolly as "our Darwin Event Director, the only event in the Northern Territory". Covers running in Darwin's build-up humidity ("running in a swimming pool"), crocodiles genuinely being on the event's risk assessment, the 222-runner attendance record set on Valentine's Day and the traffic-light run they repeat that weekend, milestone technical tees, the morning a tank parked their volunteer's car in, how he found parkrun via the Marathon Talk podcast, Darwin's October 2013 launch, and planned NT events at Palmerston and Katherine.
Social Adventurers starts at 28:28
Melissa "This week on the social adventurer scene", a round-up of listener posts hashtagged #parkrunadventurers: positivism number one's photo of two junior parkrunners holding hands to a 51-minute PB and a Kurt Fearnley photobomb; underscore PK "all in pink"; Nod Lightyear's shot at Coburg parkrun; and Running Guy Ryan, who dresses as Where's Wally or Spider-Man, clocking 15km around his parkrun. Scott also flags the parkrun / Australian Paralympic Foundation February fundraiser linked from results emails, donating per parkrun kilometre.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 32:06"Where is the cake?"
Scott "There are no launches this week", Studley's launch has slipped by a fortnight, then "But where is the cake this week?" Anniversaries: Golden Beach (QLD) second birthday with a carnival fiesta theme, which Melissa is attending; Ipswich second birthday with a Tackiest Formal Wear theme ("like Melbourne Cup dress, but at the end of the day, not the start"); and Lake Mac (NSW) third birthday on a Valentine's/love theme. Leads into a discussion of Valentine's traffic-light parkruns and a mortified at being read as looking for a girlfriend.
Sign-off starts at 36:04
Mel signed off saying she was off to watch Mo' Better Blues, told Scott she would talk to him later and said see you later to the parkrun adventurers; Scott hoped she enjoyed it, said he might catch up on Clueless, and closed by saying they would chat to everyone again next Wednesday.
