Running for 48 hours: pacing, the mental battle, taking on coach John Pearson ten weeks out, the Coast to Kosciuszko qualification system and its 50-place cap, the overlap between the ultra and parkrun communities, prize money (or the lack of it), and his parkrun record, 89 parkruns at six events, 26 of them at Kawana, three sub-18s with a 17:53 best at Noosa.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:06
Scott Trickett and Melissa Erbacher, episode 12, wondering whether listeners are bingeing or getting their midweek fix. Mel is back on the Sunshine Coast after flying to the launch of Rockhampton parkrun, already called Rocky: two shaded laps through the Botanic Gardens next to the zoo, past an emu enclosure (no emus at the fence), pelicans and corellas, an avenue of bamboo, a Japanese garden and a cenotaph whose RAN topiary she read as 'ran'. Scott promises a Sly Stallone impersonation at the end of the episode.
Meet the ED starts at 5:54
Melissa's field block from the Rockhampton parkrun launch. Scott hands over with "You caught up with the ED?" and she rolls tape on Event Director Craig plus volunteers Rod (timing) and Phil (marshalling), 191 finishers at the inaugural event, and Craig's line "It's sort of like an enjoyment concentrate. You just add people and away you go." The block runs on into vox pops with launch participants David and Gary, and with Craig, the Event Director of Gladstone parkrun, who ran the course as a visitor. Scott closes it "Nice reporting there, Mel."
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 26:13
Scott crosses to Cassandra of Stones Corner parkrun, reporting from Hagley parkrun in Christchurch, so far as this pass can tell, the show's first international roving report. She interviews Run Director Mordecai on the flat figure-of-eight course around Victoria Lake, the golf course it passes through, minus-four ice on the path last winter, and a new parkrun being planned at Pegasus; then runs a set of vox pops asking Kiwi parkrunners to sell their events to Australians. Introduced as the fruit of last week's listener challenge to record a freedom run.
Social Adventurers starts at 30:19
Instagram, Facebook and Twitter round-up: "underscore PK" tail-running for the first time at Mount Barker; Macalicious21 at Mornington Peninsula; Oscar the Hound, a parkrunning greyhound with his own Instagram; Heather's.happysnap on her Tamworth Tri Club season finale and best-tri-suit award; the Bunyaville trail runners; New Farm parkrun sharing the show's page; Rowan Durant's freedom-run post; and Shellharbour parkrun's sunrise photo. Closes with a plug for the show's five-star iTunes reviews.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 33:02"Where is the cake?"
No launches this week. Scott's hand-over is the segment's own catchphrase, "can you tell us where the cake is, Mel?" Birthdays: Manjimup turning two, its "twin" Mount Barker in South Australia also turning two, and Riverway in Queensland turning three, all running Easter themes for the long weekend.
Sign-off starts at 33:43
After the Easter-themed anniversaries, Mel remarked that that was it already, another week over, and that listeners would have to wait another seven days; Scott said next week would be their 13th episode, prompting banter about whether 13 is lucky, and both thanked the listeners who had been with them since January. The episode then dissolved into banter about Scott's Elvis-sounding "thank you very much", his rule that he only sings in German, and a request that he save 99 Red Balloons for episode 99.
