The parkrun adventurers are breaking all the rules in the pursuit of adventures this week, and Tim Oberg shares his experiences of parkrun in South Africa. We celebrate five years of parkrun in Australia, heading back to where it all began with Main Beach (opens in a new tab) parkrun original Brendan Murray. And roving adventurers Donella, Gerry, Gary and Darren check in with updates from Lismore (opens in a new tab), Lillydale Lake (opens in a new tab) and Hervey Bay (opens in a new tab) parkruns.

Jet-lagged back from 16 days in South Africa - parkrun in an African township near the Mozambique border, results delivered by SMS over the old GSM network versus affluent Constantia Greenbelt in Cape Town; the third global Country Managers Conference; how parkrun is funded (Stockland, Suncorp Bank, government grants, a hinted new sponsor, the first ever parkrun singlet); and running the Two Oceans half marathon with his wife Nikki, plus results for Matt Shields, Paul Sinton-Hewitt, Tom Williams and Bruce Fordyce. Scott Trickett and Melissa Erbacher, self-appointed poets of podcasting, mark parkrun Australia's fifth birthday and recall their first parkruns: Scott turned up to volunteer at Highlands and found Event Director Sue doing every role, a keep-it-simple lesson echoed by Albert Park starting Saturday with 300 runners and no equipment, getting through on an iPhone and post-it notes. Scott volunteered Saturday and broke his own rules on Sunday with a solo headphones run finishing on the Diamond Creek course; Mel explains her song deals on shuffle and her plan to break runners' rules at the Bunbury Three Waters half marathon this weekend: eating on the run, a last-minute costume with body paint and glitter, and wine the night before. They ask listeners for pre-race rituals and superstitions.

Four roving reports back to back with no studio hand-over: Donella Taylor from the Lismore parkrun launch (first-timer Noreen Finucane, her twin sister and Lismore Event Director Belinda Smith, and Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell), Gerry also at Lismore with second-placed visiting Brit Martin Gillies, Gary Clark from Lilydale Lakes [Lillydale Lake] in Victoria, and Darren Walters from Hervey Bay with volunteers Graham, John Street and Kylie. Scott and Mel recap the block "that was a nice collection of roving reports we got this week."

Scott said it was time to wrap it up for the week and wished Mel good luck for her weekend, saying he was very jealous; Mel replied that no luck is necessary in costume making, it is all in the preparation, and that it was all about the shiny bling at the end.
