Show notes
The parkrun adventurers head to South Australia for the launch of Nuriootpa parkrun and some wine-tasting! It’s a riot of roving reports this week with Channel 5 News Crew members reporting in from three Aussie states, and we speak to Matthew Whitaker who just snagged himself a new Guinness World Record at the Blackmores Sydney Marathon. And we announce the #levelup challenges for those over-achieving #streakyseptember parkrun adventurers.

Matt Whitaker
Breaking the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon run in a three-piece suit (2:44:28, beating the previous 2:58) at the Blackmores Running Festival — the Guinness rule set, buying a suit one size too large, training runs in the suit, chafing and Vaseline, overheating in the last 15km, rival Mike Tozer's Fragile X Association fundraiser, and a mooted two-person-costume marathon record attempt next year.
Roving reports
In this episode
Channel 5 News Crew
The roving-reporter corps branding, named three times on air ([00:01:50] "Channel 5 news crew"; [00:15:52] Melissa calls PK "the best member of the Channel 5 news crew"; [00:29:10] Lyndell "I've loaded up the Channel 5 bus and headed out to the launch of Redcliffe parkrun"). Scott notes at [00:02:36] that TOC is "making a big play to get in the Channel 5 news crew". PK jokes at [00:15:54] about wearing a powder-blue safari suit and a microphone with a big fluffy number five.
The Compass Club (new adventurer club)
Melissa Erbacher breaks news of upcoming compass-point changes: Western Australia's point shifting from Geographe Bay to Margaret River, and a new Tasmanian event launching in January that will create a new southernmost point. She then rules, with co-creator Christine Timms, that compass points are fixed by the start/finish pin rather than the furthest extent of the course — settling the Kingscliff vs Ballina Coast debate in Kingscliff's favour. She notes she is a co-creator of the club but not yet a Navigator herself.
Roving Adventurers (roving reporter crossovers)
A four-report week, flagged up front by Melissa at [00:02:56] "Epic week of roving reports this week." PK from the Nuriootpa launch in the Barossa (07:35-18:29, including an ambush interview of Scott and Melissa themselves, who were there in person); Greta from the same Nuriootpa launch (18:29-24:07); TOC from the Pakenham anniversary (24:12-29:03); Lyndell Murray from the Redcliffe launch in Queensland (29:06-43:47).
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
No launches this week, but a full anniversary list: Ashgrove and New Farm in Queensland, Toowoomba (running its City of Flowers botanical event), Bowral (rendered "Barrel"), Merimbula and Tamworth in New South Wales, and You Yangs in Victoria. Framed as Melissa advising Scott where to run while he is visiting Brisbane.
Streaky September
Progress check-in on the September daily-streak challenge. Scott calls it "transformative" — injured after his stack, he has walked every streak with his daughters and formed a family habit. Melissa reports it has got her out the door daily, tracking 21.3k then 22.4k then 15k so far, chasing her biggest mileage month in years and running a full unbroken kilometre for the first time in ages. The streak also recurs through the roving reports (PK at [00:17:29], Lyndell asking Tim Oberg at [00:40:42] whether gym and yoga count).
Social Adventurers
Shout-outs to listeners who hashtagged the show. Instagram: Ezra Runs, Ready Debbie Run, Moon Unit Ultra, Athletic Powerhouse, Miss Spelt, underscore PK, Enjo Smith, Be Like Mel. Twitter: Ross Pine. Facebook: Jane Luke (who blogged about the show), Chris Fraser ("a streak is a streak and life comes second"), Andy (running a poll), Melissa Ellis, Rachel Broughton, TOC, Adrian Royce, Peter Pohlman, Amanda O'Reilly, Felicity Castellan, Skye Smith, Oliver Spake, Sarah Pixley, Mel Alderton, Neil Stralia, Jay Schultz and Lou Bray. Plus a shout-out to the Strava group.
The bingo level up challenge — Melissa Ellis
Announced in response to Melissa Ellis completing the Streaky September bingo card first ("the only confirmed bingo completer at this stage", also "our August Madness champion"). Scott and Melissa Erbacher set three level-up challenges for her and for themselves: streak before the sun rises, streak barefoot for at least one run, and streak at a parkrun you haven't done yet. Scott invites listeners to challenge her further and to "make up your own letters".
