In this episode
Meet the ED
Scott and Mel interview Tamworth parkrun Event Director Jeff Bartlett — Tamworth's country-music identity, the out-and-back course along the Peel River, its flood-cancellation risk, its third anniversary, and how he and his wife Jan got involved six to eight weeks after the event launched on 1 November 2014. The second half is a long travelogue: the couple visited all nine parkrun events then existing in the USA (Fletchers Cove, Roosevelt Island, College Park, Durham, Clermont Waterfront, Livonia, Mansfield, Heritage Harbor Ottawa, Crissy Field), briefly holding the record for having done every US parkrun.
Nutrition Q&A with Kelly Hodges
First appearance of a new semi-regular contributor: dietitian Kelly Hodges (Kelly Hodges Health, Vast Fitness Academy, Caveman Kitchen, locum dietitian at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, founding ED of Kawana parkrun and now a run director there). She covers her parkrun story, UK/Ireland parkrun tourism, carb loading versus donuts for a 5k, and low-carb/high-fat diets. Mel explicitly frames it as recurring at [00:29:14] "time to get a new semi-regular guest on the show" and invites listener questions to parkrunadventurers@gmail.com for future instalments.
Roving Adventurers (roving reporter crossovers)
Lyndell Murray reports from Toowoomba parkrun's fourth birthday, coinciding with Toowoomba's Carnival of Flowers, running through Queen's Park. She interviews event director Margaret about how she and Tressa Lindenberg brought parkrun to Toowoomba, then two anniversary award winners — Paula (most parkruns at Toowoomba for the year) and junior Jess (awarded "for being awesome", four years of helping her dad set up the truck and chalk). Handed back by Mel: "Roving Report from Toowoomba, love your work."
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Anniversaries this week at Moree (NSW) and Petrie (Qld); launches at Oakey (Qld) and Carrisbrook (SA). Includes the running gag about parkruns starting with unusual letters (O, and the mooted Z parkrun at Zillmere).
Streaky September
Hosts check in on the Streaky September streaking challenge and its bonus "bingo card" tasks — the gym jams run, the before-sunrise run, the barefoot run (Scott did his as a barefoot stroll at Main Beach). Both reflect on whether they will keep streaking past 1 October; Scott says Team Trickett will try, Mel plans a looser three-or-four-times-a-week commitment. Scott notes it is intended to become an annual thing.
