Show notes
The parkrun adventurers head cross country and catch up on some Netflix. The Big Cheese of parkrun Global, Tom Williams, joins us to share the behind-the-scenes goings on for the highly anticipated launch of parkrun Germany, and gets technical with the new parkrun Virtual Volunteer app. And we have roving reports from the inaugural North Harbour and Sunbury parkrun events.

Behind the scenes of the parkrun Germany launch (three events on 2 December — Leipzig, Mannheim, Hanover — with Berlin, Munich and Osnabrück in January, resourced through Jakub who also runs parkrun Poland), the new deliberately app-only model being trialled there, unusual event requests (aircraft carriers, space stations, Camp Bastion), and the new parkrun Virtual Volunteer app — how it grew out of a Newcastle company's timing/scanning app used at Newy parkrun, why paper barcodes still work at scale, and plans for a more phone-friendly WebFMS 2.0.
Roving reports
In this episode
Channel 5 News Crew
Lyndell Murray's roving report from the inaugural North Harbour parkrun (Caboolture, QLD). She opens "Hi ho, it's Lyndell the Adventurer here reporting in for the Channel 5 News crew", having kitted herself out in a safari suit (channelling PK) and a Kermit-the-Frog-style reporter hat, then interviews first-timer Lynne, the Bunyaville contingent, Tim and Neil, Arne from the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program, and Event Director Connie.
Channel 5 News Crew
Gary Murphy's roving report from the inaugural Sunbury parkrun (northwestern Melbourne), explicitly framed at [00:47:17] as "an audition for the Channel 5 News crew". He interviews launch Event Director Natalie Harrison, volunteers Jenny and Tanya, adventurer Nathan Castle, a group of four visitors, parkrunners Jess and Cheryl, and event ambassador Mark Porritt, and reports the naming debate over the course hill (Happy Hill vs Hell Hill).
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Marriott Waters (VIC) launch postponed a week for weather; St George (inland QLD) launching this weekend. Anniversaries: Bunyaville (QLD) turning four, [Cohuna] on the Murray (VIC) turning one, Lakeview (NSW), and Mount Gambier and Torrens (SA). Also notes parkrun Germany's three-event launch on 2 December.
Word of the week
Scott supplies the German for "go crazy" ahead of the parkrun Germany launch — "verrückt werden" (ASR: "Verrack Verden") — and Mel names it at [01:03:24]: "Which is our word of the week for episode 92."
