Finishing as first Aussie at the 2018 Berlin Marathon in 2:16:39; the online support from the Inside Running community while he and Brady raced; waiting at the finish to watch Brady break 2:20; post-marathon soreness; the Brandenburg Gate finish; self-coaching and never being satisfied with a PB; why the marathon (and possibly ultras) rather than shorter distances; not having officially scanned at a parkrun since 2013 despite training through Ballarat parkrun most Saturdays; the origins and growth of the Inside Running podcast out of Brady's 'Tell Me Your Tales' and the Road to Berlin series; how underappreciated elite Australian distance runners are; realistic Olympic/Tokyo qualifying prospects; and being in the ladies' tent when Eliud Kipchoge came in after the world record.
Roving reports
In this episode
Channel 5 News Crew
Roving report from Railton parkrun, Tasmania, filed by Gary Murphy while visiting with his wife straight off the Spirit of Tasmania. He interviews Ben Jozefiak (just completed his 50th parkrun, ex-UK, now Launceston) and Catherine, Railton's Event Director and RD on the day, who recounts Railton being the 250th Australian parkrun to launch, TOC's visit and accidental 'parkrun plus', the sceptical local Mayor, the Tasmanian Trail and Sykes Sanctuary loops, and the town's topiary. The episode's show notes attribute this report to the Channel 5 News Crew; on air the hosts credit it simply to Gary.
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Four launches after a fortnight with none: Braidwood Showground (NSW), Cowpasture Reserve Camden (NSW), Montrose Foreshore (Tas) and [Stebonheath] (SA). Anniversaries at Ashgrove (Qld), Bowral (NSW), [Merimbula] and Moree (NSW), New Farm (Qld), Tamworth (NSW) and [You Yangs] (Vic). Scott interrupts the calendar to ask Mel, in her parkrun Australia operations capacity, why new event names look different; she explains the new global naming policy (smallest identifiable geographic reference, future-proofing for second events in the same town, Albert Melbourne and Ipswich Queensland as legacy examples) and confirms existing events will not be renamed.
Hotline
Two listener questions, now folded into the Streaky September bingo card as a challenge. Question one, from Simon: favourite and least favourite training session — Scott picks short sharp sprint sessions and names the long run as his least favourite (skipped for three or four months); Mel picks intervals as both favourite and least favourite. Question two comes in as an audio clip from Gary Murphy at Sunbury parkrun on behalf of his mate Flynn: the strangest place you've ever run — Mel describes the fancy-dress [Marathon du Medoc] in France, Scott describes finding an abandoned altar with concrete pews in Warrandyte State Forest and a near-miss getting benighted at the local dam.
Streaky September
Streaky bingo progress: the hosts add an asterisk option to the 'last minute' (post-11pm) challenge for anyone who does not feel safe running late, replacing it with a Cinderella-themed 'run carrying a whole pumpkin' alternative. Scott's daughters have broken their streak; Scott doubts he will complete the bingo card. Melissa Ellis is named as the first person to finish her bingo card and is asked for level-up challenges after posting a video of herself running a magpie gauntlet in a helmet and a Collingwood jumper. Strava art from the group is praised.
The Perlustration (annual listener survey)
Preview only this week. A Facebook poll's results are held over to next week as a lead-in to the Perlustration, which returns in October with another GPS watch as the prize.
Double Barrel Club (new unofficial club proposal)
A new unofficial club floated by Scott and credited to Glen Moore of Curl Curl parkrun, suggested on a freedom run around Centennial Park: complete the Australian events whose names are a doubled word — Mullum Mullum, [Woy Woy] and Curl Curl. A campaign to rename Wagga to Wagga Wagga is mentioned, and Mel nominates [Bli Bli] on the Sunshine Coast as a future entrant. Briefly mis-said as 'the Daryl Barrel Club'.
