Melissa Erbacher and Scott Trickett, the last episode before the listener meetup and live recording at The Beaches, with Mel nursing a hot glue gun burn from costume-making. Mel timekept at Lota while her brother and sister-in-law Nicholas and Michelle run-directed for the first time, her niece Lani did the Acknowledgement of Country from memory and Adam volunteered; Scott ran a wet, muddy Centennial Park with CEO Tim Oberg, collecting his C, then went to western Sydney for the inaugural Run West and a showdown with colleague Carol, told via Tim's running commentary.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 11:19
Tim Oberg's field report from the inaugural 12km Run West in western Sydney, recorded on his phone while running with Scott Trickett - the hosts call it "not a roving report... a running commentary report" (-). Tim sets the scene in the parkrun wave (~1,500 of 7,000 runners), runs through the not-yet-open Sydney Zoo, interviews apricot-shirted Lionel from Penrith Lakes mid-race, reports Scott's hamstring going at the 8K mark, then picks up at the finish line with Dave 'Robbo' Robertson on commentary, an interview with Glen Turner (health and wellbeing lead, parkrun Australia), Scott limping in, and finally Carol Cunningham, whom Scott had a wager with and beat despite walking the last 4K.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 24:37
Mark's roving report from Jindabyne parkrun, Banjo Paterson Park, NSW - a 195km, 2hr20 drive with the family. A detailed stats rundown (launched 9 June 2018, 915m above sea level, course records to Michael Daly and Sarah Tapp, average time 33:18) and the point that J is a rare alphabet-challenge letter, with David Messenger having completed his alphabet there on Australia Day. Interviews with Event Director Rosalie on running a parkrun in a tourist town, and with volunteer Erin on why she volunteers. Signs off asking Scotty and Mel to check their Wilson Index against event number 42.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 35:44
Lyndell's roving report from East End parkrun, New Plymouth, New Zealand - a return visit to the town where she once staged a pop-up "parkrun of one" because there was no event there. Arrives 15 minutes late and only completes half the course, but interviews Andy (a Manchester transplant volunteering as run coordinator), Tail Walker Erica Perry, and Run Director Trevor Masters on how he and Erin Vaughan set the event up, plus why it is named East End rather than New Plymouth.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 47:48"Where is the cake?"
Two launches this weekend - Lawn Beach in Victoria and Narrakort [Naracoorte] Lake in South Australia, the latter filling in a pocket near Mount Gambier and Portland - plus the launch of parkrun in Japan at Futako Tamagawa, with the hosts wrangling the pronunciation and the local "Niko" prefix. Anniversaries: Kedron (QLD), Lismore (NSW), Main Beach (QLD) and Taralgon [Traralgon] (VIC), with Main Beach's anniversary marking eight years of parkrun in Australia.
Sign-off starts at 51:32
Scott declared that wrapped up the parkrun portion of the episode, and after a gag about the federal budget the pair turned to the palm19 weekend: Mel doubted she could manage the Friday night freedom run at Newy on top of The Beaches the next day, Scott revealed he had a torn hamstring, and both agreed they would at least be at the Newy finish line. They talked up Newcastle - Scott's number one bucket list event, hyped by Robbo for years, and a place Mel had never been - before Scott left it there because it was getting late and they had packing to do, saying he would chat to her in a couple of days' time live and in person, and Mel said she would see him there.
