Ada Macey
Ada's experience of coming out as transgender and transitioning within the parkrun community: the parkrun Australia newsletter article written about her (the most popular the organisation has ever published) and the response to it, including parents of transgender children reaching out; how the parkrun community handled her transition; the physical effect of hormone replacement and gender confirmation surgery on her running and her shift toward volunteering and VI guiding; her LGBTI community radio work and advocacy on transgender visibility; her mother's and grandmother's support; and her top three parkruns.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:19
Scott Trickett and Lyndell Murray, breaking new ground with a third co-host, Ada Macey, who says she and Lyndell go way back. Lyndell's first guess was Fluffy the emu from Nambour, and Scott promises an update on Fluffy and Miffy at the end of the episode.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 22:02
David Moss ('Mossy') files a roving report from the inaugural Charleys Creek parkrun at Chinchilla, Queensland. He interviews Adrian Royce of Wishart parkrun (who won the inaugural event and clocked his 100th different Australian parkrun), Event Director Ronald Thompson on the three-year effort to get the event off the ground, and local first-timer Alan Middlebury. Around 150 participants on a five-degree winter morning; the course runs beside Charleys Creek, a tributary of the Condamine, with two hills and a railway crossing.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 29:44"Where is the cake?"
No launches this week. Scott corrects an administrative error from the previous episode - Atherton's anniversary was announced a week early and is actually happening this week. Anniversaries also at Aveley (WA), Cobram (Victoria), Strathalbyn (South Australia) and Woy Woy (NSW), with the standard cake line: "So if you head to Atherton this week, you can get cake."
The Other update starts at 31:15volunteer 'Other' role challenge
Follow-up on a listener challenge from the previous episode to collect the 'Other' volunteer credit. Scott had predicted no response and got one - Hayley Louise earned her Other while shadowing as a trainee Run Director. Ada adds a second: volunteering as 'Other' at Albert parkrun in Melbourne while recovering from surgery, covering photography, setup, funnel and marshalling in one shift. Leads into a plea to Event Directors never to turn away a volunteer even when the roster is full.
Top three parkruns starts at 50:51
Scott asks Ada for her top three parkruns, explicitly flagging it as a revived bit - "We haven't asked our guests for a top three for a long time." Ada picks Narrabri (her New South Wales hometown), Albert (Melbourne) and a third, noting the common theme that all three run around a lake.
Sign-off starts at 53:32
Scott thanked Ada for coming on as their experimental third host, calling the experiment a success, and gave his sincerest thanks to Lyndell for filling in for Mel, saying Mel was keen to come back but that he could not confirm it. He then asked Ada to close the episode by telling them about Rikki, who had contacted her to write the article and had been a friend ever since; Ada said she would love to see Rikki on the podcast, thanked both hosts and wrapped up episode 163.
