The wedding he conducted for Will and Louise on the Newy parkrun course before they ran their first parkrun as a married couple; Newy's "raising of the barcode" tribute tradition (for Maureen, for Russ, for Jen, and for parkrun Australia patron Ron Clarke in 2015); being a lifelong runner from the first running boom; Newy as Australia's seventh parkrun in 2012 and his ~300 runs there; touring the 15 parkruns of the Region of Runners; crewing for a friend at the Western States 100; his long-term ankle injury; and being named Medibank parkrun Hero for September, nominated by his daughter Anna, with a trip to Burswood Peninsula parkrun in Perth as the prize.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:24
Melissa Erbacher hosting with David Moss as the show's first international co-host, recording from Brighton Library in the UK after the pub he had scouted closed for renovations. Dave ran Mole Valley parkrun at Denbies Winery in Dorking, getting a lift from two housemates running a 55km ultra, and had been hiking the Surrey Downs near where his mother grew up around Guildford; Mel tail walked the five-event-old Harris Avenue at Narangba, which took her tourist quotient to 50 percent at 83 different events out of 166, and met listener Lisa Akerson from Lota.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 38:00
Block of self-contained roving reports. Greta from the Stebonheath (SA) first anniversary, interviewing junior volunteer Kobe (who re-records his Acknowledgement of Country to the Kaurna people) and Event Director Cheryl about the course change from an out-and-back to a figure-eight double loop; then Cameron Drake's debut report from Shipwreck parkrun, Hilbert WA (event 59), with Run Director Raoul. A third un-branded report, Melissa's, closes the run of reports at 00:56:55 from Burley Griffin parkrun, Canberra, with Run Director Kim and a bride-to-be, Steph, who ran in costume with her bridesmaids.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 45:01
Two explicitly Channel 5 News Crew-branded roving reports back to back. TOC (Tony O'Connell) reports from Lorne parkrun on the Great Ocean Road, interviewing tourist and Shepparton Run Director Chelsea and Lorne Run Director Carly about the six-month-old event and its run out along the pier; then Lyndell Murray from Rocks Riverside parkrun in Brisbane, with Run Director Paul on the event's ~400-strong fields, and with Katrina, who completed her 14,080 km Run Down Under that morning as finisher number 56.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 1:08:09"Where is the cake?"
Brief host-read launch shout-out in the solo outro: good luck to the event team at Warrington Lakes Reserve in New South Wales, launching the coming weekend. The episode's anniversary content sits inside the roving reports instead, Greta covers Stebonheath parkrun's first anniversary, complete with cake, local MP and councillors, at 00:38:00, and Dave Moss invokes the segment catchphrase during the guest interview ("does that mean with the wedding there was cake for everyone?").
Sign-off starts at 1:08:16
Mel gave a final shout-out to everyone who took part in or completed Streaky September, saying she had loved the gnome selfies, the Strava art and the ties and tutus, reported that she had personally covered 77 kilometres, noted that the Facebook group had renamed itself Streak to New Year's Day and admitted she had broken her own streak on the first day of October but had made herself a personal goal to keep moving more than before. She trailed episode 178 with a co-host back on Australian shores and regular programming resuming, signed off with "until next week, happy parkrun adventures", and left listeners with the last bit of audio she and Dave had captured.
