Roving reports
In this episode
Acknowledgement of Country starts at 0:00
Oliver Spake opens the show with an Acknowledgement of Country for the Wurundjeri, Dharawal and Yuin peoples, followed by Melissa Ellis explaining for listeners what an Acknowledgement of Country is and noting that it is National Reconciliation Week in Australia.
International Ugly Christmas Singlet Day starts at 7:04
Running thread about the 'ugly buff' order, which closes Thursday 3 June ahead of International Ugly Christmas in July. Olly confirms he ordered a shared family pack; revisited where the hosts tell listeners orders have now closed but to watch the page in case 'those cheeky elves' reopen them, and start the countdown to the December Ugly Christmas Shirts and singlets.
Emails starts at 42:07
Listener feedback read out: a correction on last week's brief Auslan discussion. Olly gives a shout out to Georgia for volunteering in the Sign Language Support role at Shellharbour, and apologises for having said she 'performed' Auslan rather than speaking it as a language.
Dazza's starts at 43:28
The weekly read-through of listener Facebook comments about post-parkrun food and coffee, closed by Mel with 'that is it for the cafe'. Contributors this week include Sam Schroder (Chipping Norton and gozleme at the Liverpool Growers and Foodies Market), Cameron Drake, Val Warwick (snowy kunanyi / Mount Wellington, half cow), Belinda Taylor, Mandy Oliver, Helen Davis, Janet Reid (the Meadows launch, South Australia's first 5km-loop event), Rebecca Bailey, Alison King, Caro Vos, Bernadette Bennett, Ingrid Botha, Mark Scarborough (Wagga Bridge), Andrew Turner, Lee Caparita, William Barlow, Yvonne Cohen, Claire Stutchbury, Tracy Wood, Brett and Tanya Bailey and Chris Fraser. Running gags: snot logs vs snot blocks (vanilla slices) and a sausage dog in a Christmas jumper.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 56:37
Alison King reports from Wanaka parkrun on New Zealand's South Island in four-degree cold, interviewing Brisbane tourist Olive, Brisbane couple Chris and Prue (who ran in puffer jackets), and Event Director Adam Sharman on the friendly rivalry with Queenstown parkrun. 29 runners; she recommends flying into Queenstown, hiring a car and driving an hour north, and staying at the Edgewater Resort for the scone menu.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 1:02:33
PK's roving report from Christies Beach parkrun, South Australia, his first visit and his fifth 'C' for the Pirate Club. He interviews Bob Hooper (105 parkruns), Charles (around 115), local Member of Parliament Katrine, and Co-Event Director Rich, and closes on parkrun being about community. Seacliff was closed for path works, boosting numbers to roughly 200.
the Informant starts at 1:08:55
Two-part stats bit. First the Intern breaks into the Informant's office to nick a Kit Kat, finds his computer unlocked and files the weekly report early: 449 events worldwide, 302 in Australia, 33 in New Zealand, seven more USA events back (17 total), launches at The Avenues (SA) and Canyon Rim Trail (US), 32,038 Aussie/NZ runners of 37,554 worldwide, 4,844 PBs, 1,056 first-timers, plus milestone, bingo and Wilson Index rundowns. Then the Informant himself returns to point out the South African download was still running, adds 25 South African events, 977 runners, 97 PBs and 82 first-timers, and notes he is owed a Kit Kat.
Sign-off starts at 1:18:37
Ollie said it had been a pretty big week and Mel agreed it had been fun-filled with lots going on all around parkrun world; they asked listeners to stay tuned and keep them informed, and to send feedback by email. Ollie said that was it for another week and they would see everyone next week for more adventures, after which Mel added a special 21st birthday shout-out to friend of the podcast and Shellharbour parkrunner Em, and the two sang Happy Birthday to her.
