Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:23
Melissa Ellis with Ollie Spake, a week overshadowed by a new global parkrun record. Ellis Palace went 1920s gangster with Mel explaining speakeasies and bathtub gin and Paul sent out for the household's first bottle; Ollie got out for a run in the rain, then finished the home Olympics with a bronze for India in the trampoline "artistic jumpy-jumpy" and a minor injury to show for it. Mel had caught up with Caitlin, the new fastest female parkrunner, for the interview.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 29:27
Alison King's roving report from Sherwood Reserve parkrun, Browns Bay on Auckland's North Shore, New Zealand's newest event, launched 3 July. She explicitly files it "for the Channel 5 News crew". Three-lap course passing the start/finish six times, protected native short-finned eels under "Ely Bridge", a "Stonehenge" section and a "Troll Bridge". She interviews first-time Run Director Helen Watson (renowned in Auckland for her milestone cakes) and co-ED Scott Arrell (31 of 34 NZ events, with Trentham, Pegasus and Wanaka to go). This event completes the North Island and the whole country for her, and coincided with the return of Sherwood Pines parkrun in England, marked with "Scott airplanes" at the start.
the Informant starts at 38:10
Weekly stats rundown, opened with a comic scene-setter about Paul sliding into the adventurers' Monday Zoom "wearing nothing but socks and undies singing into the TV remote" doing the Tom Cruise Risky Business. Stats: 1,041 runs across 17 countries, 191 in Australia and 34 in New Zealand; Finland returned with 2 and South Africa with 23; UK 545. Three launches, Patawalonga River (SA), Horsepath and Woodgate Valley Country Park (UK), and Park 850-letiya Moskvy. 16,553 Aussie/NZ runners out of 136,914 worldwide, 2,034 PBs and 591 first-timers. Milestones, nine bingo calls (Madison Chippett quickest on 164 events, Darren Hill slowest on 331), 15 new Statespeople, and Alison King becoming a North Islander and Countryman. Signs off pointing listeners to theinformant.me.
Dazza's starts at 43:55
Listener check-ins read by both hosts, split this week into a "Team Lockdown" not-parkrun half and a "Team actual parkrun" half, a faster new format the hosts note worked well ("we managed to whip around Dazza's ... in less time than Caitlin took to complete Lochiel parkrun"). Watching the Olympic Women's Marathon was the running theme (Peter Pohlman, Jodie Macy with Brendan Peel, Adelina Trott, Bernadette Bennett). Not-parkruns from Mandy Oliver, Jeff Whiffen, Tracy Wood, Tony O'Connell, Sam Schroder, Ingrid Botha, Tina Johnston, Simon Mackley and Abigail's mum; real parkruns from Greg Garner, Val Warwick, Pippa White, Penny Simpson (100th volunteer), the Bailey family, and Alison King. Closed with a long post from Janet Reid at Lochiel recounting the record-breaking morning there.
Emails starts at 1:18:23
An email from listener Bruce with further Bingoe card suggestions for Streaky September; the hosts are collating entries and will announce the final cut of bingo challenges closer to the time.
Streaky September starts at 1:18:40
Trailed rather than run, last call for listener bingo-card suggestions, with the hosts promising a full preview "in the weeks to come". Olly flags it to newer listeners as "a highlight" of the podcast year.
Sign-off starts at 1:20:46
Ollie asked whether Mel had any plans for the week; she said not real live parkrun plans, with Melbourne still locked down and regional Victoria released but not yet able to parkrun, so it was stillparkruns, though she had already started planning a theme she was excited about. Ollie said he was locked in, locked down and injured, and would get out for a jog and enjoy everyone else's parkrun andparkrun experiences. He said that was it for the week after a massive, crammed episode, congratulated the stalwarts who had made it right to the end, asked for last Bingoe card and parkrun club suggestions and any feedback via Facebook or parkrunadventurers@gmail.com - offering to email the parkrun Australia link to David's book to anyone not on Facebook - and closed saying they would see everyone next week for more adventures.
