The founding and community of Bellerive parkrun, her own parkrun journey from the UK in 2014 via launching Traralgon parkrun, what she loves about volunteering, the morning's stats (event 173, 294 participants, the event's first on-course proposal), her pregnancy, and the Bruny Island Ultra relay.
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:23
Recorded live at Palm 2022 from Bellerive parkrun in Hobart, Ollie Spake (Shellharbour) and Mel Ellis (Toolern Creek) acknowledge the muwinina people and today's Tasmanian Aboriginal custodians, thank the Bellerive volunteers and Fiona's team at Hurricanes Cafe, and take a show of hands for how many Palms attendees have been to. Highlights from the morning: Brendan Peel's finish-line proposal to Jodie, the out-and-back course with its hill and stadium finish, purple for International Women's Day, Nadine Crawford's birthday, Bec Bailey's 100th and Shultzy's 450th, before a short interview with RD Brooke, the Palm quiz and more.
Meet the ED starts at 9:44
Studio-style interview with Brooke Van Nooten, founding Event Director and that day's Run Director at Bellerive parkrun, Tasmania, how she started the event (she moved from Victoria to Tasmania in 2015, joined the Hobart/Risdon Brook Dam crew, and launched Bellerive on 28 April 2018 as it approached capacity), her own parkrun journey (discovered parkrun in the UK in 2014, helped launch Traralgon parkrun in Gippsland in 2015), what she loves about volunteering, the event's stats that morning (event 173, 294 participants, the event's first ever on-course proposal), and the Bruny Island Ultra. She is two weeks from having her first baby.
palm quiz starts at 17:49
The live palm listener-meetup quiz, which Ollie also calls "a bit of palm madness". Lyndell Murray stands in as quizmaster, crediting Simon Mackley as the actual quizmaster and question-writer; Chris keeps score on a spreadsheet. Four contestants with improvised buzzers: Brendan (Albert Park), Dawn (Chelsea Bicentennial), Michael "Shultzy" Schultz (Kedron) and Leonie (Brightwater). Questions covered where-am-I and who-am-I parkrun clues (including one whose answer was TOC/Tony O'Connell and one whose answer was Toolern Creek, "the home parkrun of Mel"), the Adrian Hon interview in ep253, the Consolidated Club List numbers, Abby's sign-off catchphrase, the informant's car (a 1991 Nissan Pulsar), the collective noun for ugly singlets, and which parkrun countries had not reopened after the COVID pause. Dawn won with 4, Brendan 3, Leonie 2, Shultzy 1.
the Obi Award — Dawn (palm quiz winner, Chelsea Bicentennial parkrun) starts at 32:25
A special one-off physical Obi presented as the palm quiz prize: a 3D-printed gold Buddha reading "palm22", made with the help of adventurer friend Stephen Davis. Mel calls it "our very first real-life Obi". Consolation prizes for the other contestants included blue frog granola, a copy of On Every Saturday (donated by David Crook) and a toy red convertible "Ferrari".
parkrun vow renewal ceremony starts at 35:50
The episode's surprise "special parkrun themed ceremony" (per the show notes). Tony O'Connell officiates in character as celebrant, marrying "two peas in a pod", an unnamed couple celebrating 25 years registered together and their 25th wedding anniversary, using parkrun-themed vows ("if faster or if slower in PBs or DNF", "whether your barcodes be digital, printed, laminated or tattooed", "as long as your barcodes both remain active"). Ends with an exchange of barcodes and "By the power vested in me by the Channel 5 News crew, I now pronounce you P1 and P2." The purple dress code for the day was a 25th-anniversary reference.
Sign-off starts at 39:40
Recorded live at the fifth listener meetup at Palm, the hosts turned from the day's vow-renewal ceremony to an outro of thank yous: to the Belle Reve parkrun team for hosting, to the Channel 5 News crew (presenting Tracy with a microphone and press pass, with Alison in New Zealand unable to attend), to TOC and Linda, to Chris the artistic director, to Abby, to the informant and the intern, to Dazza, to party planners TOC and Jackie, to their families and to each other. Ollie added thanks to Fiona and the team at the Hurricanes, and to Paul and Eric from Hobart Open Air for the recording equipment, and said he was from Tasmania and had not been back in 22 years. Mel gave the Facebook and email contacts and said they would see everyone next week or at the Freedom Run that afternoon.
The Channel 5 News crew starts at 41:15
Thanks to the Channel 5 News Crew, and the palm tradition of presenting attending crew members with their press passes. Two new crew members were inducted this year: Alison, who could not attend and is in New Zealand, and Tracy, who is presented with a microphone and press pass in the room.
