Johan Duvenhage
How a back operation and his doctor's advice led him to parkrun in January 2015 at Naval Hill; moving to the smaller, more intimate Heidedal parkrun in the township, its multi-loop course around the cricket, rugby, soccer and netball fields at Clive Solomons Stadium, its rough trail-like surface and its 20-80 weekly field; the pop-up cafe they ran pre-COVID; the difference between South Africa's huge events and its rural ones; his beta-testing work on the Running Achievements app and its World parkrun Tourist Group section; being a born Namibian who has done all four Namibian events; and the pronunciation challenge he has been setting the hosts.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:23
Ollie Spake on Dharawal Country and Melissa Ellis on Wurundjeri Country, keeping the intro short because both are packing for Palm. Mel tail-walked Wyndham Vale's sixth birthday (her ninth visit) in purple and orange, where visiting adventurer Eman from South Toowoomba led the field home with an all-time PB, then brunched at Cafe Notorious in Werribee; on Sunday at Eynesbury juniors Abby's mum brought balloons for Mel's 100th volunteer. They throw to Mel's interview with Johan Duvenhage in South Africa.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 21:08
Sam Schroder reports from Huskisson parkrun on the NSW South Coast with her husband Luke - their fourth visit but the third version of the course, its two relocations for crowding and COVID social distancing, an out-and-back with ocean views and a navy boat on the bay, and matching finish times of 44:44 and 44:45. Huskisson is where they first said I love you and where they honeymooned.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 23:53
Tony O'Connell reports from the brand-new Cyril Curtain Reserve parkrun in Williamstown, Victoria (event number three, 90 finishers), interviewing Event Director Bronnie about five years of work to bring parkrun to Williamstown, the course change forced by density restrictions and lost landowner permission, the three-surface three-lap course through an off-leash dog park, the six-month council trial, and Joanne and Scott Watkins as mentors.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 32:05
Tracey Wood ("Tracey in a tutu") tours Redland Bay parkrun, south-east of Brisbane, and finds the whole event already in tutus for 22/2/22. She interviews Run Director Cheryl (four birthdays, event number 207, usually 90-120 finishers) and Tail Walker Rachel, who describes the two oval laps and the concrete path up to the golf course.
Dazza's starts at 37:16
Acknowledged but deliberately not run this week because of the abridged "tempo run pod" format. Ollie thanks everyone who popped into Dazza's and mentions adventurers proudly showing their Adventurers Club membership there, then says "Dazza is being left in Facebook land this week".
the Obi Award starts at 37:36
No award given this week - explicitly withheld. Ollie: "we're keeping the Obi on the shelf... we did make a joke last week in the pod about the Obis being handed out a bit too rapidly. So we're maybe just pulling back on that slightly. And we may need that Obi for next week, Mel." No recipient was named.
Consolidated Club Report starts at 38:16
Melissa Ellis reports the Adventurers Club up to 119 members (up eight on last week) with 100 members on the Consolidated Club Report: eight UK events (Southampton, Homewood, Cheadle Hulme, Haigh Woodland, Heartlands, Irchester Country Park, Roberts Park, Charlton), two in New Zealand (Puarenga, Greytown Woodside Trail), two in South Africa (Koster, Atlasville), two in the USA (Joe Creason, Spindletree) and adventurers at 49 parkruns across Australia.
the Frond starts at 38:59
A passing mention rather than a standalone segment this week - inside the club report Melissa notes "Adventurers representing at 49 parkruns across Australia with five having palm fronds at both Wyndham Vale and Cyril Curtain Reserve this week." Worth recording because the Frond only first appeared in the immediately preceding episode (273).
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 47:29
Lyndell Murray reports from Wondai parkrun on a rail trail in the South Burnett, Queensland, on the lands of the Waka Waka people. She interviews Claire - newly appointed event ambassador, Wondai's home-grown Run Director since launch, who did her first ever parkrun in Western Australia the week before Wondai started - and Winston, today's RD, on his 106th volunteer day, who lives across the road and looks after all the gear. Wondai's event number 233 falls next week for Fibonacci Challenge chasers.
the Informant starts at 58:50
Stats rundown from "Level 2 with a view" with the office empty: five junior events, 319 juniors, 64 first-timers; 423 runs down under out of 1,405 worldwide; 5,674 PBs; five new statespeople; Peter Sutton the biggest windex mover, up 22 into second on the ACT leaderboard; two new Cow Club members. Last week's quiz answer was 132 and Bruce Purdy won with a guess of 150; this week's question asks how many of those Peel Parkies have also run in both islands of New Zealand. This speaker also closes the episode.
Sign-off starts at 1:03:30
The Informant delivered the sign-off in character at the end of his stats report, saying it was getting late and he had to do the whole sign-off thing tonight, pointing listeners to the downloadable spreadsheet and to The Informant on Facebook, and then reading the hosts' usual script - contact via Facebook or parkrunadventurers@gmail.com, "that's it for another week, and we'll see you all next week for more adventures".
