Lyndell Murray
Lyndell's Cowell, her 100th different parkrun event, at Fodder Forest; her NENDY (Kingscliff rather than Ballina); her top events apart from home, Milano Nord in Italy during the Monza weekend, plus Kawana, Nambour and Mount Gambier. The 'bottom three' answer is lost to the radio interference that gives the episode its title.
Louis Bravos — visiting parkrunner from Bakersfield, California (name as spoken)
A US tourist at University of Western Australia parkrun, in WA for the total solar eclipse at Exmouth, he says the parkrun is 'almost as good as the Eclipse' and that he is the longest-distance participant at his home event, Byxbee in Palo Alto.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:24
Ollie Spake on Dharawal Country and Melissa Ellis on Wurundjeri Country, with Mel coaching Ollie on saying Melbourne and both reminding new listeners that the show is an unofficial hobby podcast, not parkrun itself. Ollie was in Melbourne for a family trip to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, with a side trip to Phillip Island, and joined Mel at Woodlands Historic Park parkrun, his third Victorian event, where Bill Lodwig, Errol Poole, Scott Trickett, Geoff Wiffen, Martine Barrot and Andrew Johnston were also present; Mel explained rogaining, they saved course details for Jorge's roving report later, and Ollie wished Em from Shellharbour a belated happy birthday.
parkrun news bulletin starts at 10:13
Ollie's news and discussion round-up: Shellharbour parkrunner Jess Hull breaks the Australian and Oceania women's 1500m record in 3:57.29, her ninth Australian record, number four in the world in 2023 and number five Commonwealth all-time, tipped off by friend of the pod Michael Gentle with stats courtesy of David Tarborton, plus her three Shellharbour PBs and former course record. Then Global Running Day on Wednesday 7 June, its history as US National Running Day from 2009, the Garmin badge and parkrun partner Brooks' virtual 5km Strava challenge.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 15:24
Mel hands over, "Now it's probably a good time to throw to our roving reports", to four reports: her own from Woodlands Historic Park with ED Jorge, PK from Oaklands Estate Reserve with a visually impaired Run Director and his guide, and TOC's European double from Ziegelwiese (Halle, Germany) and Amager Fælled (Copenhagen). Ollie closes the block thanking PK, TOC and Mel.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 27:05
TOC signs on for the crew from Europe, "TOC from Inverloch reporting in for the Channel 5 News crew", covering both the Ziegelwiese and Amager Fælled reports on his European Grand Tour.
Dazza's starts at 33:41
Mel's written recap of the week's posts, themed around World Bicycle Day: Linda Coombes nottying at Birdsville with Warwick friends, the Office Lady and Luke also in the outback town, David Bravos on the Merri Creek Trail with Lucy at Coburg, Claire Corkill at Blue Gum Hills, Sherry Martin at Minnippi, Billo and Roberta Winters fronding at Yass, Erica Leota at Glenoma, the Quizmaster at Fodder Forest, Chris Fraser regaining his statesmanship, Sherry Bradman at Wentworth Common, Chloe Bravos at Shelley, Martine Barrot and Andrew Johnston plane-watching at Woodlands Historic Park, Bec Bailey at Sandon Point, Carmel Roll at West Beach, Patricia Smith at Scribbly Gums Conservation, Ingrid at Mossman, Caveman Cam, Karen Campbell at Central Lakes, Lyndell leading the frond at Fodder Forest, Jo McLean at Broadbeach Waters, Anne Fry at Pakapakanthi, Holly Pleasance at Warwick, Cherie Cottle at Newy, Felicity Castellan at Inverloch; then New Zealand (Alison, Axel at Tauranga, Tanya at Pegasus, Brett), and further afield TOC at Ziegelwiese, Natalie Soper at Richmond Olympic and Calum Burrell at Somerdale Pavilion. Weekly volunteers named, and the broadcast closes with the recurring 'Steve's bike' mystery post, "I love a day named after me", teasing a Victorian parkrun with a large wall that Ollie can't place and TOC solved.
Consolidated Club Report starts at 44:39
For Saturday 3 June 2023: of 433 members, 338 took part at 177 locations. UK 26 events, South Africa 3, USA/Sweden/Netherlands/Italy 2 each, Canada/Austria/Denmark/Germany/Norway/Poland 1 each; locally 31 events in Victoria, plus New South Wales and Queensland, South Australia 12, WA 11, four on the North Island, ACT and Tasmania 3, two on the South Island. Mel notes it was not posted on Sunday because she ran out of time and appeals for a volunteer to help compile it; Ollie thanks a quiet tip-off for making sure every state and territory was reported this week.
the Frond — Fodder Forest and Glenoma (tied, nine adventurers each) starts at 46:12
Largest frond of the week, announced inside the Consolidated Club Report: nine adventurers at each of two events. At Fodder Forest, Lyndell Murray, Simon Mackley, Leonie Butler, Lisa Atkinson, Irene and Parth Bommakanti, Rhonda and Ian Garvin and Belinda Taylor. At Glenoma, Roger and Barbara Luther, Erica Leota, Ian and Catherine Greenstreet, Gemma and Neil Kiaski, and Pauline and Russell Taylor. Ollie predicts next week's largest frond will be at Shellharbour's ninth birthday.
Sign-off starts at 49:30
Ollie asked about the coming weekend: Mel said she had her Toowoomba visitors but genuinely did not know where she was going and listeners would have to tune in next week, and Ollie said he would be run directing for Shellharbour parkrun's ninth birthday on a cat theme, hunting out his cheetah and as much leopard print as possible. Mel then noted that the Shellharbour people who had been at Coober Pedy had not posted in Dazza's, unlike those in Birdsville, before thanking first-time listeners for sticking with them, giving the Facebook and email contacts and signing off.
