Episode 319 - Alphabet Ears
A contested result: the two largest fronds are disqualified for breaking the unwritten rule by attending launches, so Shellharbour "does a Bradbury" and takes the largest frond with six adventurers - a win Ollie cheerfully concedes is "by default", since Shellharbour is his home event. Mel then thanks the adventurers who knew about the Queensland and Victorian launches and deliberately stayed away, which opens an extended soapbox discussion between the two hosts on silent launches, parkrun Australia policy, whether appearance on the parkrun map or an advertised trial event makes a launch "fair game", and Mel's own admission that she resisted the culture change for a long time.
Episode 318 - parkrun, if you’re listening
Delivered inside the Consolidated Club Report: the largest frond was a tie this week, with seven adventurers at Sandon Point in New South Wales and seven adventurers at Gatton in Queensland, prompting a short detour about whether Gatton is in Queensland or NSW (Mel was thinking of Galston).
Episode 317 - The Office Lady Option
Largest fronds reported inside the abridged CCR for each festive date: Christmas Eve at Shellharbour and The Ponds (Sam: "Hey, I was at Shellharbour!"); Christmas Day at The Ponds and Lewis Park Reserve; New Year's Eve at Ginninderra (ACT), Scribbly Gums Conservation (Queensland) and The Ponds again (NSW); New Year's Day at Jerrabomberra, where Sam gets stuck on the pronunciation and ad-libs "Don't edit this out, boss."
Episode 316 - InSantagram
Largest frond went to Shellharbour parkrun, Gordon and Julie Turner, Gaillyn Cooper, Michael Gentle, Karen Hamilton, Paddy Oshimo and Sue Keane, with young Kayleigh standing in for Helen while celebrating her junior 10 and her birthday. Mel suspects the junior events at Eynesbury and Des Connor Park actually out-fronded it.
Episode 314 - Records & Legends
Largest frond of the week went to Main Beach with eight adventurers for their event 555, Leonie Butler, Linda Coombes, M Nicholson, Pauline Taylor, Jessica Williams and Tracy Leiper among them. Runner-up was Shellharbour with seven.
Episode 313 - #getyourfeetwet
Appears here as a Dazza's category rather than a standalone segment: Val Warwick reports "we had a frond of four, although only one did the course at Bell's Parade... our parkrun frond time has only just finished after nearly 10 glorious hours together" with Brendan, Jodie and Steve. Melissa also uses the term in the Consolidated Club Report "We were all fronding" and names the largest frond of the week.
Episode 312 - parkrun party
"Our largest frond this week, Ollie, was in the Greater State with the inaugural of Prince of Wales parkrun", the relocation event for Ballarat parkrun, so event number one but with an experienced team. The 13 attendees named: Thomas Martin, Jordan Fuessel, Robin Rishworth, John Bradshaw, Nadine Crawford, Larry April, Dan O'Connell, Cheryl Smit, Tanya Pollard, Michael Charlton, Kevin Green, Wendy Glen and Kirstie Ganji.
Episode 311 - Green Eggs & Snoods
Fronds of the week: Sonja Pohlman's "delightful surprise of a mini frond at the Beaches" with P1, P2, Luke and new listener Georgina Devine, and Helen Rutter's "small frond at Gould [Goole]" for her 250th. The Consolidated Club Report later names the largest frond of the week, eight adventurers at Robelle Domain.
Episode 310 - Cheers
Delivered inside the Consolidated Club Report. The largest frond was in New South Wales, at Shellharbour, with nine adventurers present, housemate Lance, Bec Bailey, Blake Wells, Gordon Turner, the Office Lady and Luke, Roberta Winters, Sue Keane and Paddy Oshimo, plus more volunteering. Runners-up: seven at South Bank (Qld), seven at The Ponds (NSW), six at Kirkdale Reserve (Vic). A smaller frond is also referenced in Irene's Dazza's post from Chermside.
Episode 309 - Bruce & Gill Fordyce
Delivered inside the Consolidated Club Report: the largest frond was at Toolern Creek with 11 members plus Heather Morgan, with five adventurers volunteering at Eynesbury Heritage Trail Junior parkrun also in contention. Ollie concedes Shellharbour can't beat it this week - "not that it's a competition. Who's counting?"
Episode 307 - Cops & Robbers
Largest frond was 15 at Shellharbour (Housemate Lance, Richard and Sally, Sam and Luke, The Fool, Bailey Shot, Jason Green, Julie Turner, Gaillyn Cooper, Ingrid and Jasmine, Louise Clements and Paddy Oshimo); a frond of 10 at Westerfolds in Victoria (Thomas Martin, Craig and Bec Ryan, Scotty Trickett, Sally Heppleston, Bram Cassidy, Andrea Booth, Dan O'Connell, Irene and Parth Bomber Canty); nine at The Ponds. Ollie also claims the largest Vrond with 10 volunteers at Shellharbour, noting Eynesbury juniors was cancelled.
Episode 306 - King Gizzard
Frond news woven through the Dazza's check-ins: Craig Ryan fronding at Cyril Curtin Reserve for Irene's completion of Run Down Under Australia, Mel plotting a frond at Waterloo Plains, and Ollie promising to challenge for the Vrond title at his home parkrun in a fortnight.
Episode 305 - You’ve Got Mail!
Fronds (gatherings of Adventurers Club members at one event) run through this episode rather than standing alone: Roberta Winters has "a bit of a frond", a mini frond at Geeveston; Sarah Jefferson is "having a frond this week" meeting Tracey Wood at Zillmere; and in the Consolidated Club Report the largest frond was six Adventurers at Robelle Domain, Queensland.
Episode 304 - Let Us Entertain You
Ollie asks for the largest frond; Mel doesn't have it but offers two at Northparkes Oval, Paul and Zoe Ellis, as the mark to beat.
Episode 303 - Home on the range
The fronds rundown delivered inside the Consolidated Club Report: eight at The Ponds; four at Greenway (Tracy Jensen, Neeraj Kanal, Aaron and Michael Gentle); four at South Toowoomba (Pauline and Russell Taylor, Barbara and Roger Luther); the largest, six, at Des Connor Park Juniors (Belinda Taylor, Erica Liotta, Leonie Butler, Michael Blain, Michael Schultz and Tracey Wood); five at Westerfolds Junior and four at Eynesbury. Mel notes the fronds are "making the news at all the junior parkruns". An earlier frond of three is also called at Simon's home event.
Episode 302 - Lined Up
Top of the fronds was The Ponds with nine (Dennis Peden, Charles Burns, Natalie Wilson, Jeff Robinson, Joe McLean, Louise Garbers, Tarina Gearan, Mary DeLuna and Manish Bindroo). The largest frond overall was 12 at Des Connor Park junior parkrun, Michael Blain, Barbara Luther, Robin and Lance Plarn, Melinda and Pauline Taylor, Linda Ripper, Claire Stutchbury, Lyndell Murray, Cherie Martin, Tracey Wood and Melissa Ellis herself, who notes she was there in person.
Episode 301 - Thumbs Up
Six fronds this week, with The Ponds topping the fronds again, Manish Bindroo, Dennis Peden, Joe McLean, Louise Garbers, Tarina Giron and Rio Lambino. Fronds of five at Westerfolds, Orange and Beaufort Lake; eight adventurers volunteering at Eynesbury juniors.
Episode 300 - Tricentennial
Alex Turner submits a frond from UWA parkrun after meeting fellow adventurers Eman, Chris and baby Juno (there for Juno's first birthday) at the start line; Oliver Spake rules that it "absolutely does constitute a frond". The largest frond of the week is covered inside the Consolidated Club Report, a draw on seven adventurers at Orange parkrun and seven at Umbagong parkrun, with a special mention for six at The Ponds parkrun.
Episode 299 - Buzz Buzz
Largest frond of the week was 18 adventurers at Kingscliff for the parkrun Ambassador Conference: Tony and Jacqui O'Connell, Jeff Whiffen, Simon Mackley, Nadine Crawford, Amanda O'Reilly, Charlie and Paul Butler, Kate Corner, Michelle Dezago, Bruce 'the Ideas Man' Purdy, Ria Lambino, Greta Wilkinson, Alicia Hopper, Anne Fry, Emma Nicholson, Alison King and Janet Reid, plus Will, who joined too late to make the report. Other sizeable fronds noted: 11 at "the Voldemort parkrun", seven at Umbagong, and six at Ollie's home parkrun.
Episode 298 - Not Flat
The largest frond of the week was at Cooks River parkrun in Sydney, an all-time record 21 adventurers, ahead of the hosts' pre-recorded Cooks River audio earlier in the episode. Named: Eman and Kristine Vergara, housemate Lance, Ollie, Bec Bailey, Kristy Hill, Patty Oshimo, Chris Fraser, Ingrid Botha, Mia Horrigan, Mel, Helen Davis, Dawn Branton, Michael Schultz, Sam and Luke Schroder, Craig and Rebecca Ryan, Roberta Williams, Rebecca Gordon and Caro Vos, with Chris Davies and Kerry Fraser noted as missing from the report.
Episode 297 - The one when Mel sings
Largest fronds of the week, read straight after the CCR: four at Umbergong District (Mike Scott, Tanya Pollard, Michael Charlton, Tim Robbins), four at Kirkdale Reserve in Victoria (Jodie Maisie, Bruce Purdy, Joanne Blackbourn and Mel herself), five at Lota. Biggest frond of the week was at The Ponds - Charles Burns, Geoff Robinson, Joe McLean, Louise Garbers, Lisa Spencer, and Julie and Gordon Turner.
Episode 296 - Hot and Gold
Largest gathering of adventurers at a single event: The Ponds parkrun with nine. Three events tied on six, Shepparton, an unnamed event with Lance, Paddy, Jason Green, Melissa Khoury and Julie and Gordon Turner, and Umbagong District (TOC and Jacqui O'Connell, Ian Shaw, Alistair Buchanan, Irene and Melissa Ellis herself). The Vron (volunteer equivalent) is not resolved this week, "our research elves haven't quite worked that out".
Episode 295 - Aidan Hobbs
The largest frond was a three-way tie at six adventurers each: Sandon Point (Paddy, Sam and Luke, Aaron and Michael Gentle, Roberta Winters), the Ponds (Charles Burns, Dennis Peden, Jeff Robinson, Louise Garbers, Joe McLean and Lisa Spencer) and Elliott Heads Beach (Lance and Robert Flarn, Barbara and Roger Luther, Ian and Catherine Greenstreet). No largest frond recorded for Victoria this week, and the largest junior frond was not looked up.
Episode 294 - the new U
Largest frond of the week was at You Yangs - Geoff Wiffen, Kevin Green, Nicola Wright, Damon Young and Melissa herself (plus listener Andrea Booth, who joined the club afterwards and so is not counted). Melissa also nominates a likely largest volunteering frond of seven at Eynesbury Heritage Trail junior parkrun, noting volunteer fronds cannot be counted properly.
Episode 293 - Hackers
Referenced but never delivered as a segment. Ollie "So Toc joining us from Kirkdale Reserve parkrun, where all the fun was at, apparently"; Melissa Ellis "It was. The biggest friend [frond]." "More about that later." The episode's own show notes have "Mel and TOC join a few adventurers for a frond at Kirkdale Reserve parkrun". The promised later item never arrives; the episode runs from the Informant's stats straight to the Consolidated Club Report and the outro, so the Frond looks to have been a casualty of the "hacker" conceit that cuts segments this week.
Episode 292 - Floods, Cows & Milkshakes
Reported inside the Consolidated Club Report. The largest frond this week was five adventurers at Redcliffe - Lance and Robin, Roger and Barbara Luther, and two Gemmas. The biggest frond on record remains eight adventurers at a junior parkrun, including Dawn Branton, Catherine Coombridge, Melissa herself, Abby, Renee Jackson and Andrew Reynolds. A frond also comes up in Dazza's, where Roberta Winters celebrates one at Ginninderra and Graham Wilkinson narrowly misses one in Scotland.
Episode 291 - Because
Four fronds of five this week, Warrandyte River Reserve, Werribee Park Mansion, Kirkdale Reserve and New Farm (Melissa Ellis, Lyndell Murray, Tracey Wood, Pauline and Russell Taylor). Followed by the volunteering "vrond": six adventurers volunteering together at Eynesbury Heritage Trail juniors (Catherine Coombridge, Adrian Hillyer, Melissa Ellis, Vicki Smith, John Smith and Kevin Green).
Episode 290 - 98, 99, 100!
Reported inside the Consolidated Club Report. The largest frond was 11 at Dolls Point: Eman and Kristine Vergara, TOC and Jacqui O'Connell, Nicole Robinson, Patrick Peacock, Patty Oshimo, Tracey Wood, Caro Vos, Gaillyn Cooper "and some random guy dressed as Jack Sparrow" (Ollie himself). Volunteer fronds: four at Werribee Mansion (Renee, Hannah and Abigail Jackson, Robin Rishworth) and four at "the parkrun that shall not be named" (Gordon and Julie Turner, Michael Gentle, Chris Fraser). TOC also flags a frond in progress live from Dolls Point.
Episode 289 - Lorikeets are Metal
The largest frond of the week. On the Consolidated Club Report numbers it was Altona Beach with seven (Russell Johnson, Craig and Rebecca Ryan, Melissa Ellis, Sam and Luke Schroder, Jodie Maisie); Ollie counters with six Adventurers Club members plus as many volunteers at Shellharbour, arguing volunteers should count, and Mel then trumps both with eight adventurers volunteering at Aintree Heritage Trail junior parkrun. Fronds are also discussed at 00:05:54 (Mel's Altona Beach weekend) and referenced as the 'Frond Wars' in the cold open.
Episode 288 - Travel Tips
Largest frond of the week went to Lewis Park Reserve with five adventurers, Bram Cassidy, Irene and Parth Bommakanti, Dawn Branton and Cheryl Smit, "and there would have been six if Mark Smit would just come on board." The hosts then set up a "Battle of the Fronds" for the following week: Mel hosting Luke and Sam Schroder at Altona Beach parkrun (plus a junior frond at Aintree on the Sunday) against Ollie's Shellharbour 8th-birthday frond.
Episode 287 - Rhubarb Lemonade
The week's largest frond went to the travelling South Australians at Broken Hill Racecourse parkrun, Kate Corner, Gordon and Julie Turner, Janet Reid and Alicia Hopper, the same group Janet described in her audio Dazza's. Ollie also spots Shellharbour locals at The Beaches.
Episode 286 - 99 Apfelsine Blätter
Melissa "But to bring up the largest frond, Ollie, it was at Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens with seven adventurers going to event number two" - housemate Lance, Robin Rishworth, Bec Bailey, Michael Charlton, Paddy Shimo, Roberta Winters and Michael Gentle. Reported inside the Consolidated Club Report, as usual.
Episode 285 - Better together
Two parts. (1) Melissa reads Tracey Wood's proposed backronym for FROND - "Friends Reunite on Neutral Dirt" - which Ollie adopts on air "I'm going with Tracy's [Tracey's] one. It's locked in", and Melissa "We'll just pretend that's what it means now." (2) The week's fronds are then called out as they come up: Andrew Johnston and Martin/Martine Barrot at Toolern Creek's Festival of Mel, Ingrid Botha's tourism outing, Claire Winojic at Bramley Cowfest, and the largest, announced inside the Consolidated Club Report - "there were a frond of eight at Boweral [Bowral] relaunch, which included Tim Robbins, Chris Horowitz, Heather Morgan, Sue Smith, Melissa Currie, Jasmine and Ingrid Botha and Richard Karching."
Episode 284 - The Very Very Best Day
Awarded inside the Consolidated Club Report "And our biggest front [frond] this week was five adventurers at Werribee Mansion parkrun." Two smaller fronds are noted in passing earlier in Dazza's: Cass Castleton with Simon Mackley at Yarrabilba ("It was practically a frond") and Karen Hurrell with Juliet Colville at Cheadle Hulme ("Another frond"). The term's origin is also explained on air in the Emails segment this week.
Episode 282 - Cass Castleton
The week's biggest gathering of adventurers at a single event went to Warrandyte River Reserve parkrun, where Mel was one of six adventurers. The hosts expect it to be beaten next week at Picton, where Sam Schroder is celebrating a triple milestone (100th parkrun, 100th volunteer and 100th time at Picton) on the event's fourth birthday.
Episode 281 - Hoppy Easter
Victoria again tops the events list, and the two events with the largest fronds were Warrandyte River Reserve (5) and Werribee Park Mansion (4), the two newest Victorian parkruns still drawing the most Adventurer Club members.
Episode 280 - Breakout
Adventurer-meets-adventurer reports inside Dazza's, "But on the frond front this week, we heard from Ingrid Botha" at St Peter's parkrun with Bec Bailey, and a second frond from Andrew Turner, who met Melissa Ellis at Werribee Park Mansion. The Consolidated Club Report later notes the largest fronds of the week: seven adventurers at Werribee Park Mansion and eight at Warrandyte River Reserve.
Episode 279 - Phil Gore
Frond sightings reported inside the Dazza's posts rather than as a standalone block: Tim Robbins notes he was "part of a frond", and Oliver Spake says "another frond was taking place, there were a lot of fronds", reading Bec Bailey's report of the Windang clan meeting "the mini frond of Ingrid, Helen, Stephen and Chantel" at Greenway.
Episode 278 - Goldilocks
Fronds (gatherings of Adventurers Club members at the same event) are tracked through the episode: Melissa Ellis has "a little frond going on" at Toolern Creek with Lynn from Cobram and her grandson Axel; Oliver Spake is "on the edge of another frond" at Shellharbour with Sam, Luke, Bec Bailey and Paddy Oshimo; Chris Fraser takes part in one at Main Beach; and the club report names the week's biggest frond as seven members at the Warrandyte River Reserve parkrun launch.
Episode 274 - Johan Duvenhage
A passing mention rather than a standalone segment this week - inside the club report Melissa notes "Adventurers representing at 49 parkruns across Australia with five having palm fronds at both Wyndham Vale and Cyril Curtain Reserve this week." Worth recording because the Frond only first appeared in the immediately preceding episode (273).
Episode 273 - Falling for You
The weekly palm frond competition between the two hosts, decided on how many adventurers gathered at each of their parkruns. Nine adventurers appeared on the Consolidated Club Report at Menai (Ollie's "little posse") against only seven at Lewis Park Reserve (Mel's), so the award goes to Ollie, who deflects the credit to Bec Bailey for organising the outing. Mel adds a mock complaint about the number of Westerfoldians at Lewis Park Reserve who are not on the club report.
Episode 272 - Ercan Boduk
Oliver Spake urges listeners to join the Adventurers Club before palm22: "let's see if we can get the biggest frond we can possibly get at Belle Reve [Bellerive] parkrun on the 5th of March in the Consolidated Club Report." Mentioned in passing rather than run as a full segment, the first reference to the Frond in the corpus so far, one episode ahead of its previously recorded first appearance.
