parkrun Adventurers episode #388- When 3 Becomes 5.
This week Simon was joined by Sarah at both of their remote stand up desks. There were adventures talked about from Broadbeach Waters (opens in a new tab) parkrun and Jakes Point (opens in a new tab) parkrun. They talked about their favourite parkruns (but one of them can't count ), bucket hats (will you purchase one?) and a challenge (but not as you know it). There was a return to Dazzas, emails and Rachel checked in. There were launches and indecision about where they will be this week.
Renata Koch kept flying after the finish line to get this balanced pic!

Welcome starts at 0:24
Sarah Jefferson on Noongar Country and Simon Mackley on Quandamooka Country, with Sarah set to become a monthly co-host. Simon ran Broadbeach Waters, his penultimate Gold Coast event, 100th Australian event and 50th in Queensland, and names his top Aussie picks (Albert Melbourne, Coombs, Cowra, Ocean View and Main Beach); Sarah travelled to Kalbarri with Andrew Yeatman, Tanya Pearton and Matthew Stevens for Jakes Point parkrun on Nanda Country, where UK adventurers Malcolm and Sarah Peaty were volunteering, and saw breaching whales, leaving Town Beach (Broome) and Esperance as her last two WA events. The pod is late because Mel is in New Zealand; they discuss the new reversible parkrun bucket hat and Mel's little plane mascot, which Sarah suggests tracking with a QR code.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 18:24
Simon throws to "a very famous person on the pod" and Sarah Jefferson's pre-recorded report from Jakes Point parkrun at Kalbarri, WA plays, six and a half hours north of Perth, event 43, including her interview with Event Director / Run Director Melissa Finlay. Sarah back-announces that this was the only roving report of the week.
Dazza's starts at 22:52
Dazza's NAIDOC Week post asks listeners whose country they ran on. Sarah and Simon read back responses to TOC's photo challenge (posing with an event's selfie frame, upside down or from above): Tracey Leeper in South Australia, Greg Garner at Victory Heights Trail (200th event, 200 balloons upside down), Heather Hunter at ABGMA, Alana Troring at University of Western Australia, Mel Ellis at Balclutha in New Zealand, and Yvette Turner at Bushy Park.
Emails starts at 27:54
Two items. Michael Blain, RD of Des Connor Park Junior parkrun, proposes splitting the Professor Club into a junior sub-club and a volunteer sub-club to accommodate the two Australian junior parkruns hosted on school grounds (Bellevue Park and Des Connor Park). Then Simon reads a message about Adrian Royce and Lynette Ferguson's "wedding parkrun" at Wishart, the RD's full wedding-ceremony run brief, vows and all, delivered to 250 parkrunners.
Club Corner starts at 32:34
Rachel, coming to you from Arrernte Country, introduces two new unofficial clubs: "It's What's New" (events starting with 'new', New Farm, Newborough, Newcastle Park, Newport Lakes, Newy) and "On the Town" (11 events with town, -ville, -borough or -berg in the name), with jokes in between. Simon and Sarah back-announce and compare their own tallies.
Consolidated Club Report starts at 36:32

the Frond — Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan (largest Australian frond, 13); Tamworth Castle Grounds (largest international frond, 8) starts at 37:36
Largest international frond: eight adventurers at Tamworth Castle Grounds (Denise Evans, Debbie and Andy Airey, Charlotte Minchell, Cameron and Sammy Gerrish, Nadege Rutter, Kim Leonard), plus a two-person Bushy Park pilgrimage by Yvette and Bill Turner. Largest frond in Australia: 13 at Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 38:49"Where is the cake?"
Three launches: Guild parkrun in a closed facility in the UK (33 finishers, 13 volunteers, 11 first-timers); Alby Gård parkrun in Alby, Norway (63 finishers, five volunteers, an unusually high share of first-timers ever, the first five finishers had never done a parkrun); and the Promenade at Abermaw/Barmouth in Wales (106 finishers, five first-timers, 20 volunteers).
Sign-off starts at 40:45
Simon said there would be no listener challenge that week because the pod would be out late due to editing, then asked where they were headed: Sarah was undecided, weighing a trip home to Cottesloe, which she rarely gets to unless she is run directing, against somewhere local to tick off a Wilson number, and would be solo as Matt was working; Simon was undecided between Surfers Paradise to knock off his last Gold Coast event or volunteering locally, depending on the weather. He said it had been really good having Sarah on the pod again and that he would see her in a month's time, then gave the Facebook and email contacts and 'that's it for another week'.
the Obi Award — Melissa Ellis starts at 43:35
Held back until after the outro music. Sarah: "You all thought that we had forgotten to hand out the Obi this week", Simon opens the envelope and gives it to "Mel over the ditch", i.e. Melissa Ellis, who is in New Zealand and posted her first Aotearoa parkrun at Balclutha (blue skies, bridge, first female) in this week's Dazza's.
