Welcome starts at 0:23
Sarah Jefferson on Noongar Country and Simon Mackley on Quandamooka Country, a month on from their last pairing. Sarah, recovering from a run of bugs, walked Town Beach parkrun in Broome on Yawuru Country (event 60, a five-lap course past the jetty and the Catalina wreck site), leaving only Esperance to complete WA, and announced she is pregnant. Simon recovered from the Clint Eastwood Backyard Ultra (eight and a bit laps, 55k, a new longest distance, coaxed on by his wife and by ultra runners Ryan Crawford and James Blanton), then ran the new Capestone Lake event 23 with Sean, Rhonda and ambassador Megan; Sarah stayed close to home at South Beach Recreation Reserve event 142 on Whadjuk Country before a funeral, with Matthew Stevens swimming afterwards; Simon closes with a call to review and support the 5K app after its outage.
Budgie update starts at 17:36
Sarah reports that Budgie, the travelling baton launched the week before, was spotted at Penrith Lakes parkrun in a selfie-frame photo held by "the adorable Juno". Sarah checked the results and found five adventurers at Penrith Lakes that morning, so she suspects a handover took place and Budgie has been "smuggled away" to a new event for next week.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 18:56
Simon hands over "I think we should throw across to our roving reports". Two reports run back to back: Tracey Wood from Mitchelton parkrun in Brisbane (tail walking with Melissa, marshal James, RD Denise) and Johan Duvenhage from Hilton parkrun in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands (Thandi Zilewe on 538 parkruns, and Wilna van Eminus on her 99th event). The hosts come back, noting Tracey's report had been "lost in the ether for a week or two", and praising Johan for rephrasing the standard top-three question as "where have you gone that you will never forget?"
Dazza's starts at 31:00
Dazza's prompt this week was International Geocaching Day, "getting outdoors, going to new places and getting souvenirs. Sounds familiar?" 103 comments. Posts read out: Val Warwick from Tasmania at Lake Wallace; Belinda Taylor at Coober Pedy after an eight-hour drive each way; Jodie Macy of Victoria, visiting WA, at Lake Claremont for her 99th; Bec Bailey back at Shellharbour; Andrew Yeatman at Woodbridge Riverside; Tanya Bailey at Invercargill with an 8-out-of-10 cheese scone at the Cheeky Llama Cafe; and Gareth Arnold from the UK on his granny's bird-spotting.
the Obi Award — Gareth Arnold starts at 35:52
Sarah asks "have you got the envelope this week?" and Simon replies "I have the Obilope". The Obi goes to Gareth Arnold for his Dazza's post about dragging the UK family out to parkrun, where Granny spotted "great tits, blue tits, bearded tits", a post Sarah had to read out on air and then look up to check that a "little tit" really is a bird.
Emails starts at 36:18
Two emails. Stephen Warwick describes his Sausage Roll Club challenge, using the letters of SAUSAGE ROLL for events run, volunteered at and freedom-run, completed with Lake Wallace at Edenhope, and nominating the community-run Store Cafe 6343 as having the best sausage rolls in the country. That prompts the hosts to pick their own: Simon a bacon and egg roll challenge (stuck for a second O), Sarah, who eats neither bacon nor meat, an acai bowl challenge. David Messenger answers Mel's question from the previous week: 69 currently open parkruns start with K, 81 historically, with closures after COVID (about five in South Africa) offset by Killarney parkrun in Ireland renaming to Killarney House.
Club Corner starts at 41:50
Rachel, coming to you from Arrernte Country, covers three unofficial clubs: Tree Folk (tree and wood names, Blue Gum Hills, Oakey, Scribbly Gums Conservation, Peppertree, Woodlands Historic Park, plus the long stretches Applecross and Orange; 13 events), Gardens (the botanics, Mansfield, Benalla, Southern Highlands, Eastern Gardens, Rosebud, Wildflower; 9 events) and On the Streets (Bayview Road, Harris Avenue, Jubilee Way, Nathan Road Sports Ground, Old Thompson River Road, Ridley Place Foreshore, The Avenues). She says she is running out of clubs to highlight and asks for suggestions, then fills the gap with three jokes. Simon backs the appeal, warning it will otherwise "turn into Rachel's joke corner".
Consolidated Club Report starts at 44:44
The adventurers Consolidated Club Report for Saturday 17 August 2024: of 672 members, 479 took part in 11 countries across 255 locations. UK 50 events; five adventurers in South Africa, three in the USA, two each in Sweden and Ireland, one each in Italy, Norway, Malaysia and Japan. Domestically Queensland and Victoria tied on 46 events, New South Wales 44, Western Australia 22, South Australia 10, Tasmania 7, North Island and ACT 6, South Island and the Northern Territory 1 each, which Sarah calls a bowling strike.
the Frond — Chermside parkrun (frond of seven) starts at 46:08
Largest international frond: eight at Hanworth, Ian and Alexander Thompson, Andy and Helen Patricia Rutter, Claire Winnesage, Nicola Stott, Ali Sheppard and Jenny Dimmick. Nobody made the Bushy pilgrimage this week. Largest frond overall: seven at Chermside, Neil Cullen, Nicole Robinson, Simone Biddle, Belinda Cafe, Fern Patterson, Tracey Natutu-Wood and Liz Adamson. Simon reminds listeners they can add the Adventurers Club as one of their five parkrun profile affiliations.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 47:00"Where is the cake?"
One launch this week: Ankerskogen parkrun, north of Oslo in Norway, a five-kilometre course of two and a half laps on gravel paths within the park area, mostly flat with a small hill at the bottom of the trail. 90 finishers including 50 first-ever parkrun finishes, with 10 volunteers. Sarah thanks TOC for putting the course length in the notes; Simon hopes the gravel road is closed to traffic.
Sign-off starts at 48:05
Simon set the week's listener challenge - drop the word 'Paris' into the Saturday social post for the start of the Paralympics - then asked where Sarah was heading: to Newcastle Park parkrun for their event 79, Wilson chasing, which she believed would take her Wilson index from 78 to 95. Simon planned Underwood Park, somewhere he had been only once, to keep his tourist streak going. He thanked her for joining him for another week, said he would speak to her again in a month's time, and closed with the Facebook and email contacts and 'that's it for another week'.
Streaky September starts at 49:49
Post-outro Streakmeister insert setting up the month: 30 minutes of intentional exercise a day, roughly two kilometres of walking or running, a bit more on a bike, a bit less swimming or doing yoga. A spring start in the Southern Hemisphere and a way of carrying summer momentum into winter in the Northern. The job for the week is to find your "streak saver", the short route you can always walk on a day that has gone pear-shaped.
