Guest interview — Brad Beer
Scott and Mel interview sports physiotherapist and author Brad Beer (Main Beach parkrun, Gold Coast) about injury prevention: his five key ingredients for injury-free running, the power of rest and not spiking training load, the most common running injuries he sees (stress reactions/shin splints, Achilles tendinopathy, ITB friction syndrome), and his single tip for running faster — cadence of ~90 steps per minute per foot (180 total).
parkrun adventure challenge (listener challenge)
Scott sets the guest a personal 'parkrun adventure': "I want to set you a parkrun adventure, Brad... I want you to run a 25 minute parkrun" — i.e. slow down and meet the mid-pack. Brad accepts ("I'll accept the challenge, Scott and Mel") and promises to report back.
Tim Oberg listener Q&A
Recurring slot in which parkrun Australia's Tim Oberg answers listener questions. This week: Jakub from Gdynia asking whether parkrun would fund the hosts' trip to Poland (no — but a $4-per-listener crowdfund is floated); Marianne on making Clean Up Australia Day a formal annual parkrun event; Will on commercialisation, why Adidas left as national sponsor, and a proposed gold-coin donation (declined — event teams shouldn't handle cash); Danella on the likelihood of a Sydney Opera House parkrun (depends whether the path sits with City of Sydney or the Centennial and Moore Park Trust); and Mel's question on Tribesports apricot tees, customisable performance tees and singlets/vests due April.
Roving Adventurers (roving reporter crossovers)
The roving-reporter slot, empty this week: "We don't have any roving adventurers... No submissions this week. I think maybe they heard Gary last week and thought, no, the bar has been set too high." Mel reassures listeners: "Not everybody sounds like Gary Clark... We have no standards here. Just talk to someone, send it to us, we'll probably use it."
Social Adventurers
Quick run through the week's listener posts on Instagram/Facebook: John Z. Webb visiting Westerfolds parkrun with his son before heading back to Coburg; a photo of Albert Melbourne run director John; Chris Wade volunteering at Jells Park; and Sandy's family driving from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast ("4.45am starts so we can go hang out at our fave parkrun with our fave Zoolanders"). Regular hashtaggers are name-checked.
Where's the cake? (parkrun anniversaries wrap-up)
Mel's catchphrase cue "so where's the cake this week, Scotty?" opens the weekend anniversary rundown: Parramatta turning three (brightest fluoro and a party hat), Albury Wodonga turning two (bright tights and tutus), and Dawesville in WA turning one (80s rad retro run) — plus the new Bairnsdale parkrun launching in eastern Victoria. Digresses into running in party hats, wigs and false moustaches.
