Guests

Euan Bowman

Country Manager, parkrun Canada

The launch of parkrun in Canada. Euan traces his own parkrun history, finding a free 5k time trial after moving to Basingstoke around 2007, contacting Paul when there were only three or four events in the country, and starting the North Hampshire Time Trial with a colleague, growing it from 35 runners to around 200 a week. Then the first Canadian event, Okanagan parkrun at Mission Creek in Kelowna, BC, put on by Bill Justice, with 96 finishers in 35-degree heat; Tom Williams attended and Euan beat him. Mel asks about bears and moose in the risk assessment; Scott asks how Canadian winters will be handled. Euan sets out the plan: ~25 active leads, cities first then remote communities, and possibly 500 events within six to eight years.

Mark Huth

Event Director (Co-ED), Chermside parkrun, Brisbane

Chermside parkrun's first anniversary and 50th event, both falling on the same Saturday: cake, a onesie theme (Mark has a Doctor Who TARDIS onesie he wore for the first time that day) with red as the alternative for the 50 milestone. He describes the course in 7th Brigade Park beside Kidspace playground on Brisbane's north side, averaging 150-200 runners after a 360-strong launch; how he came to start it after emailing Tim; his top three other parkruns (South Bank, Bunyaville, Sandgate); and being teased about having done 28 events almost all in Queensland, with Nambour still on the to-do list.
