Training tips for recreational parkrunners — varying distance, pace and course, broken 5K sessions, reverse loops, Mona fartlek, and running by perceived effort; plus his own preparation for the World Masters Indoors in Korea.
Paul Jude
Strathalbyn parkrun — its location on the Fleurieu Peninsula, the New Year's Day double with Mount Barker, the 2017 Community Event of the Year award, and his favourite parkruns (Mount Barker and Lawson, NSW).
James Clegg
How Strathalbyn parkrun started out of Mount Barker, the Angas River out-and-back course, and his favourite parkruns (Murray Bridge and Huddersfield in his UK hometown).
In this episode
parkrun news bulletin
Melissa cues "Are you ready for some news?" and the pair read two scripted news items: South Australia's parkrun tally since December 2012 (1,014 events, 7,131 volunteers, 99,169 finishes, with 100,000 expected to fall next parkrun day), and the end of UK legend Ron Hill's 19,032-day running streak. Followed by an unscripted discussion of running streaks, including Melissa's own 115-day cello-playing streak.
On the Couch with Coach Steve
Brand-new coaching segment. Scott introduces his own coach, Stephen Dinneen, who gives tips for improving parkrun times: mix up runs ("variety is the spice of life"), vary distance/pace/course, break a 5K into 2x3K efforts with a walk break, run a familiar loop in reverse, and use a Mona fartlek on out-and-back courses. He advises working off perceived effort and not worrying about getting sessions wrong. Sign-off notes he is heading to the World Masters Indoors in Korea in March.
Meet the ED
Interview with the two co-Event Directors of Strathalbyn parkrun (SA), Paul Jude and James Clegg: the Angas River out-and-back course, how the event grew out of Mount Barker, their New Year's Day double with Mount Barker (179 runners against a usual 30-50, with course records set by visiting UK runners), winning the 2017 Community Event of the Year award at the Strathalbyn Rotary Australia Day breakfast, and the standard closing "top parkruns" question (Murray Bridge and Huddersfield for James; Mount Barker and Lawson for Paul).
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
No launches anywhere in the country this weekend — Melissa jokes that this gives adventurers a chance to catch up. Two anniversaries: Toolern Creek parkrun (Victoria) turning two, and Woodbridge Riverside (WA) turning one. Melissa uses the segment's catchphrase: "Where's the cake though, Scotty? Or donuts, if there happen to be donuts."
Running joke segment (unnamed)
A new end-of-episode bit the hosts had discussed off air: Scott tells a running-related joke (a Bruce Lee gag used on signs at Westerfolds parkrun), which lands flat with Melissa. She then invites listeners to send in running jokes — recorded themselves, in person on the show, or emailed for the hosts to deliver.
