Tim Oberg
Tim's return to the podcast after several months: the birth of his son Archie the day before Cyclone Debbie hit the Whitsundays, Archie's parkrun debut, and at length his newsletter piece about living with anxiety - the response it got, how running and the start-line heart-rate spike interact with anxiety, finding a genuine home parkrun at Airlie Beach after Kirra, and his advice to others (talk to someone, look at lifestyle: he has cut out coffee since August and alcohol since New Year's Eve).
Keith Hong
Preview of the third Run Nation Running Film Festival, launching that week: growth from one cinema and 256 people in Sydney in 2015 to 14 venues nationally, 1 June to 11 November, each scheduled ahead of a local marathon; how the idea grew out of a friend's 860km run across NSW for domestic violence awareness; the 268 submissions whittled to seven films by a 12-person review panel, headlined by a Swedish runner's solo run across Iran; his own running (3:01:05 at Boston, "progression, not perfection") and his Sydney parkruns - Willoughby, Mosman, St Peter's, Cook's River.
Roving reports
In this episode
Most events tally (Scott v Mel)
The hosts' running competition over how many different parkrun events each has attended. Opens the episode ([00:00:39] "The question that is on everybody's mind is number 39... Did you match my number on the most events list?") - Scott's 39th was the Mount Beauty launch in the Victorian Alpine region, leaving them level. Revisited to close the show at [00:59:31] when Scott reveals he is sampling another new event on Saturday while Mel is run directing, so "we were equals for one week only"; Scott promises [01:00:29] "I'm going to mention it at the end of every episode."
Channel 5 News Crew
PK's roving report from the launch of Mawson Lakes parkrun in South Australia - the run itself (a Z-shaped course, 307 finishers), then vox pops with walkers Kylie and Peter, Zoolander tourists Kate and Jazz, Gary and Jason, and finally co-Event Director Justin Parise on how the course was designed around parkrun's no-road-crossing rule. Notable: PK states on air that the roving reporters have just been upgraded from Channel 4 to Channel 5 - [00:08:58] "one of your roving reporters for, what is it, the Channel 5 news team, I think, now, Scotty? I was very impressed when you upgraded us. And thanks so much for the merchandise, the new outfit." Mel sets it up at [00:08:28] with "we had a man on the ground, and he was wearing a suit."
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Mel segues in at [00:55:16] "straight after that, I would say come launches and then anniversaries because that's where cake are." No launches this week; first anniversaries for Bowen (Queensland), Narrabri (New South Wales) and West Beach (South Australia). Scott points listeners at the parkrun Australia blog for all launches, anniversaries and cancellations in one place, available 24-7.
