Nutrition Q&A with Kelly Hodges
Returning nutritionist Kelly Hodges answers listener questions: whether coconut oil's saturated fat is bad for you (a debunk of Ancel Keys' Seven Countries Study), serving vs portion, eating before a run, and whether runners trying to lose weight should avoid carbs. Scott adds a question of his own about measuring portion sizes.
Meet the ED
Interview with Courtney White, Event Director of Warrnambool parkrun (Lake Pertobe, south-west Victoria), ahead of the event's first anniversary - the course, the sibling rivalry with her sister at Inverloch that led her to start the event, community highlights, and windy Warrnambool weather. The segment is not named on air in this episode but it is the standard ED-of-the-week slot.
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Anniversaries at Warrnambool, Albert Melbourne and Karkarook (Vic), Calamvale and Nambour (Qld), with the hosts scoring it as a Victoria-vs-Queensland contest; launches at Whitfords Nodes (WA) and Lota (Qld).
Word of the week
Prompted by "Whitfords Nodes", Mel nominates "node" as a possible word of the week and reports back that last week's word turned out to be "space hopper", which Scott still refuses to accept.
The Perlustration (annual listener survey)
Full rundown of the 2017 listener survey (double last year's response): Q1 where listeners parkrun (Vic 1st, Qld 2nd, NSW 4th behind SA); Q2 how they listen (mostly iTunes, zero on Stitcher); Q3 events visited (21-50 most common, 25% have done an international event); Q4 preferred guest type (regular parkrunners doing irregular things, ahead of EDs/RDs); Q6/Q7 merchandise (61% want to see it, 66% would buy); Q8 who reaches 50 Aussie parkruns first (46% say a tie, 32% Scotty, 21% Mel); Q9 Game of Thrones vs NFL; Q10 favourite frog (Kermit 41%, Jeremiah 26%, golden mantella under 1%); Q11 should they return in 2018 (yes - they commit to reaching 100 episodes). Q5, held to the end, was who they would most like interviewed: Rob de Castella clear first, Paul Sinton-Hewitt second, Steve Moneghetti and Mo Farah tied third; deceased nominations led by Cliff Young, then Ron Clarke and Elvis.
TomTom Adventurer giveaway draw — Elle Fisher
Renee Gimbert is brought back on as an independent spinner of the "big wheel" of entrants' names for the TomTom Adventurer Extravaganza giveaway. The winner drawn is Elle Fisher - Scott jokes she is "not to be confused with Mel".
Naked November / International Day of Running Naked
Sign-off plug for the seasonal theme: the International Day of Running Naked (running without a watch) falls on 18 November, and Scott says he will give it a shot - with a joke that it is rough on giveaway winner Elle, who has just won a watch she cannot wear.
