On the Couch with Coach Steve
Coach Steve Dinneen returns for a training Q&A: training and racing in Melbourne heat and Queensland humidity (push sessions later, shorten reps, shade and water, acclimatisation), fluid and electrolyte balance, treadmill running in air conditioning as a hot-weather option, and a long section on pram running for Mel - pram choice, handlebar height, wrist safety strap, not overloading it, and how young is too young for a baby to be run with. Closes with him urging listeners to use the holiday season for parkruns.
Meet the ED
Connie Isherwood, Event Director of North Harbour parkrun at Burpengary East north of Brisbane, ahead of its launch that weekend. Covers leaving her home event Central Lakes to start a new one, the developers approaching parkrun and building a road, permanent course signage and funding the defib, the all-grass cross-country course through an 1800s sugar plantation with trip hazards and cow patties, the two trials, the resident breeding herd of cows, an expected crowd of 200-300, the event being on private land so no midweek freedom runs, and a parkrun tourist planning to kayak down to the Caboolture River to reach the start line.
Channel 5 News Crew
PK reports from his home event Mount Barker parkrun in South Australia on the International Day of Running Naked, opening with a running gag about turning up literally naked before being told "naked" means running without a watch. Vox pops with a string of locals about predicted versus actual times - Gary/Gaz, "cowboy", Jazz, Ken, Charlie, Cam, Joe (50th milestone), Emily, the Brownie brothers Davo and Tom, Wendy (a Victor Harbor regular), Scotty and Brent - plus Biggles the dog, who reportedly did parkour rather than parkrun.
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Launches this weekend: North Harbour and Miles in Queensland (both under the Commonwealth Games legacy program), Yokine in WA and Sunbury in Victoria. Anniversaries at Cronulla, Forster, "Camay" (as spoken) and The Beaches (Newcastle) in New South Wales, and Minnippi, Sandgate and Surfers Paradise in Queensland.
Dad joke
On Miles parkrun launching in Queensland, Scott asks "Is that miles away from you? Or kilometres?" - Mel: "Such a dad joker. We haven't had any of your dad jokes in a while." Explicitly framed as one of Scott's dad jokes, though not run as a formally titled segment here.
