Nutrition Q&A with Kelly Hodges
Kelly Hodges, the show's resident nutritionist, returns for a two-part Q&A. Part one covers post-parkrun drinks: store-bought vs freshly squeezed juice (fibre stripped out, sugar comparable to Coke, ~8 teaspoons per 250ml), reading ingredient lists for 100% fruit, lower-sugar options like kiwi fruit and berries, and why milk-based drinks (flat white, hot chocolate) are nutritionally near-complete post-exercise while almond/soy/rice alternatives are short on protein, electrolytes and healthy fats. Part two covers protein: its role in muscle repair, immunity and satiety, muscle catabolism if intake is too low, why whole food beats protein powders (powders are isolated and incomplete), plant-based sources for vegetarians, dark leafy greens aiding iron absorption, and portion sizing (palm-sized ~30g for muscle building, up to hand-sized otherwise).
Roving Adventurers (roving reporter crossovers)
Lyndell Murray files a self-contained report from the launch of Pallara parkrun in the southern suburbs of Brisbane. She checks in before the briefing, then post-run interviews first-ever finisher Ethan (New Farm local, ~294 parkruns, just turned 20), Calamvale regular Kerry "Keza" on the Calamvale community shirts, marshal Janice (wife of the ED, teaches at Pallara State School, plugs Pittsworth parkrun's fourth anniversary and its cattle-yard course), the "littlest volunteer" Maddie in a dressing gown, and ED Peter on how Stockland approached Calamvale runners about the site, the mixed concrete/grass/gravel course with its bridge, expected numbers around 100, and Pallara being an Aboriginal word meaning flat land. She signs off noting it appears to be the 20th parkrun in the Brisbane City Council area.
Channel 5 News Crew
Allan Hoskins reports from Port Fairy parkrun, where the Portland crew are touristing. He records mid-run with 200 metres to go, then interviews event director Kate on the three-lap Russell Clark Reserve course and its hills, run director Sue on the volunteer roster, Canadian visitor Paige from Calgary, Kay, and Janet who ran 5.1km after getting lost on the last lap. Signs off "This is Alan reporting for Channel 5 News at Portferry parkrun." Scott notes at [00:55:45] this is roughly Allan's third roving report.
Launches and anniversaries ("Where is the cake?")
Doomadgee parkrun in remote Queensland launches this weekend - Mel corrects the pronunciation and notes its unusual 9am start; Scott says he had planned to attend but it is too hard to get to from Melbourne, and hopes for roving reports next week. Anniversaries: Bathurst (NSW), Christie's Beach (SA), Cleland (SA), Coomera (Qld), "Marabara" (Qld) and Weipa (Qld).
Poem Zone
After a mock argument over whose turn it is to read, Mel reads a listener haiku from Chris Timewell, emailed under the subject "In Defence of the Humble Haiku": "Let's all go clubbing / Statesman, Alphabets, Compass / parkrun piracy" - a poem about the unofficial parkrun clubs. The hosts ask for more submissions by email, Facebook Messenger or the hashtag #poemzone, which Mel admits she has not been checking.
Sing-along
Scott's outro sing-along, running for the second week after last week's Bonnie Tyler effort ("I'm not going to let this go until the lawyers come after us"). This week's pick is Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" from the 1987 film Mannequin, which Scott stumbled onto late at night on Stan and then heard again in a car ad. The song plays under the credits.
