No we haven't interviewed our phone this week but that could be a fun episode one week.
Instead we rave about the parkrun Virtual Volunteer app with Penny Redhead from Newy (opens in a new tab) parkrun and Newism, the developers of the app.
And we couldn't talk about Newy without chatting to Robbo. He is back to pump up his Marathon Mystery Tour podcast.

The parkrun adventurers are all about podcasts and agents this week. We dig deeper into the parkrun Virtual Volunteer app with Newism rep and Newy (opens in a new tab) parkrun Event Director Penny Redhead, and Dave ‘Robbo’ Robertson joins us once more, this time for a Magical Mystery Tour. ‘Local’ roving reports see adventurers exploring Phillip Island (opens in a new tab) and Doomadgee (opens in a new tab) parkruns, plus Channel 5 News Crew member turned Foreign Correspondent Dave Moss reports all the way from Hampstead Heath (opens in a new tab) parkrun in the UK.

Penny Redhead
The origin and development of the parkrun Virtual Volunteer app, the prototype born from scanner/stopwatch trouble at Newy, the approach from parkrun UK, native iOS vs Android builds and why Android took longer, early user feedback, using it at a 550-600 runner event, plus her own parkrun story at Newy and her one overseas parkrun at Crissy Field.
Dave 'Robbo' Robertson
His new podcast the Marathon Mystery Tour with Steve 'Mona' Monaghetti (the Beatles nod, the Anchor platform, release plans), the founding story of Newy parkrun in July 2012 after first running on the Gold Coast and meeting Tim Oberg, how parkrun in Australia has changed in six years, and his own running/Alphabeteer progress.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:08
Scott Trickett and Melissa Erbacher, with Scott reading out a spoof list of demands from Mel's 'agent' and revealing Mel has been invited to fill in for Nicola on the relaunched With Me Now podcast next week. They compare podcast habits (Mel only subscribes to parkrun podcasts; Scott recommends Inside Running, Runner Chats and Marathon Talk, and flags guest Robbo's new Marathon Mystery Tour with Mona). Scott run-walked Albert Melbourne parkrun with Yvonne, who is building back up for the returning Streaky September, and launches a one-man campaign against headphones at parkrun, from which Mel pointedly removes herself.
Poem Zone starts at 46:02
Segment sting then Scott and Mel alternate lines of a long non-rhyming poem about Shellharbour parkrun and the parkrun adventurers Listener Meetup, sent in by listener Caroline (one of several she has submitted, being spread over several weeks). Mel's scroll fails mid-poem so she reads only the final line.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 48:52
Roving report block set up "let's get to roving reports because we've got three, three batches". TOC reports from Phillip Island for the Channel 5 News crew and interviews course-record setter Hannah Oldroyd; Dave Moss is promoted from Channel 5 News crew member to the show's first Foreign Correspondent and files from Hampstead Heath parkrun in London, interviewing ED Andy and first-time Run Director Michelle.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 54:28
Em Nicholson's self-contained report from the Doomadgee parkrun launch in far north Queensland, with three interviews: PCYC Deadly Runners participants Will and Trenton, the visiting Morton family from Timboon (Victoria), and Doomadgee Primary School teachers Sarah and Shanley.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 1:01:49"Where is the cake?"
One Australian launch this week, [Pakapakanthi] parkrun in South Australia, which PK had reported on from its trial event. Anniversaries: [Blackbutt] (NSW), Chelsea Bicentennial (Vic), [Claisebrook] Cove (WA) and Victor [Harbor] (SA).
parkrun adventure challenge starts at 1:02:30listener challenge
The August Freedom Run Challenge kicks off, one freedom run a week for the month of August, pitched as a lead-in to Streaky September. Scott has already done one at Diamond Creek; Mel, who had refused, relents and plans one in Melbourne. Listeners are asked to share on Strava/Instagram (#parkrunadventurers) and to email audio reviews of their freedom runs to parkrunadventurers@gmail.com.
Sign-off starts at 1:06:25
Scott said let's wrap this up, it had been another long one and Mel had a plane to catch down to Melbourne, thanked her for joining him and for being hilarious, and said he looked forward to hearing from her twice the following week. Mel admitted to nerves about the second edition and hoped she would not let the team down; Scott told her not to be nervous because it would be the same as they had done for 121 episodes.
