Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:18
Scott Trickett and Mel Erbacher, episode 4 of season 4, with Scott announcing he has lined up a replacement co-host so Mel can take podcast maternity leave after last week's baby news, and previewing the listener meetup with Gary Murphy of Highlands on shortly. Scott went to Studley's third anniversary (hat theme, Backwards Hat Club, a record 300-plus field) and, stung by With Me Now's Danny Norman calling Mel a stopwatch-bingo cheat, tried to engineer his last number, 48 seconds, by stopping short of the finish, only to let a group through and miss it; Mel had a Stones Corner stagger with the South East Queensland ambassadors, a breakfast Rhonda organised despite a forecast cyclone that fizzled, where the event broke its attendance record, Adam pushed Wes in the pram and Wes gave the slide five out of five.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 34:57
TOC (Tony O'Connell) files a field report from Mildura Weir parkrun on the banks of the Murray, self-identifying as "reporting in for the Channel 5 News crew". He interviews Co-Event Directors Greg and Nicole about the course (a flat riverside track with one hill near the homestead) and about the event setting attendance records in both week three and week four, with results dominated by brand-new parkrunners rather than tourists.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 39:50
Dave Moss reports from Yowie parkrun (Yowie Park, Kilcoy, Queensland) in its fourth official week. He speaks to Elle, a parkrun tourist chasing her alphabet with the Girls Run This Town group and the Run Down Under crew fundraising for defibrillators, and to Esther, a Run Director who co-founded the event with her son Joshua after running it unofficially since June the previous year. Closes on the park's statue of the mythical Yowie.
Time Travel Flashback starts at 45:07
Scott introduces the flashback bit, "Let's go to the flashback segment and it will all become clear", and the hosts revisit the weekend of 12 January. Scott was at Inverloch (TOC's home event) chasing the I for his alphabet challenge, where the pre-event briefing introduced him as a celebrity; Mel was at Mansfield Botanic in Queensland, the second of the three parkruns strung along Bulimba Creek.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 50:53"Where is the cake?"
The weekly parkrun Australia calendar: a launch at Narromine Wetlands in New South Wales, plus anniversaries at Kalia (WA), Largs Bay (South Australia), Plantations, back on the calendar after being underwater a few weeks earlier, and White Rock in Queensland.
Sign-off starts at 51:43
Scott said that, as they finished up 147, he wanted to talk podcasts: he read out two five-star iTunes reviews and asked for more, reported that changing some settings had not cost them downloads, and recommended the Ron Burgundy podcast, while Mel recommended Blank Check with Griffin and David. They ended on a running joke about performing "Shallow" - Mel taking the Bradley Cooper parts and Scott the Lady Gaga parts - with Scott using it to plug the live recording at The Beaches on the Saturday after parkrun and Mel suggesting they save the karaoke for elsewhere over the palm19 weekend.
Podcast recommendations starts at 53:25
The hosts recommend other podcasts. Scott plugs the Ron Burgundy podcast ("he's trying to muscle in on our turf"), noting Deepak Chopra as an early guest; Mel, put on the spot, recommends Blank Check with Griffin and David, which serialises a film director's back catalogue. Earlier in the episode Scott also discusses the UK podcast With Me Now, whose host Danny had accused Mel of cheating at stopwatch bingo.
