Winter nutrition and hydration for parkrunners: the hibernation urge, comfort eating versus unchanged nutritional needs when exercise drops off, roughly 1.5 litres of fluid a day in winter, and which warm drinks count toward fluid intake (rooibos, honeybush, herbal and fruit teas) versus caffeinated coffee and tea, which are diuretic.

Welcome starts at 0:16
Scott Trickett, recording late at night in Research, and Mel Erbacher, squeezing in an episode before Scott's holiday. Follow-up on the V-index (a suggestion that Running Challenges could track it, with a polite email to Andy and Laura mooted); Scott ran Ballarat's fourth anniversary, where ambassador Bruce spoke, and had dinner with newsletter writer Ricky and her family; Mel volunteered at Kawana in the Queensland cold, heavily pregnant and layered up rather than in her old unicorn onesie. Scott is heading to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, and Mel's interview with Kelly comes later in the episode.
Nutrition Q&A with Kelly Hodges starts at 10:27
Melissa Erbacher solo-hosts a winter nutrition Q&A with resident nutritionist Kelly Hodges, back from maternity leave with baby Charles audible throughout. Covers whether the urge to hibernate is physiological, that nutritional needs don't change with the season while comfort eating and dropped exercise do, winter hydration targets (about 1.5 litres), and which non-caffeinated drinks count toward fluid intake, rooibos, honeybush, herbal and fruit teas, versus coffee, which as a diuretic needs a glass of water alongside it.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 23:49
Melissa Ellis files a roving report from You Yangs parkrun in Victoria, returning to the event where listener Dawn broke her wrist in the car park a couple of months earlier. Dawn is back with a chocolate mud cake to thank the community, and Melissa interviews Peter, who drove her to Geelong Hospital when the ambulance was half an hour away. Peter describes finding parkrun via a newspaper article about Torquay parkrun's first anniversary, and the You Yangs course, one lap, all left turns, a 1.3km uphill start, and a group nearby who train huskies to pull sleds.
Launches and anniversaries starts at 28:33"Where is the cake?"
No launches this week. Anniversaries at Coffs Harbour and Jindabyne and [Newy] and [Shellharbour] in New South Wales, Frog Hollow in Victoria, and Goondiwindi, Mitchelton and Redland Bay in Queensland, plus Cannonvale Junior parkrun's first anniversary. This prompts Scott to admit the show has overlooked junior events, and to recap Westerfolds Junior parkrun's own first anniversary, a onesie run with no cake, stats or speeches, before announcing he is staying on as its Event Director rather than handing over at the twelve-month mark.
Sign-off starts at 36:28
Scott said Buster was crying to get out of the recording studio so it was time to wrap up 159, told Mel he would see her soon and that listeners would hear from her in a couple of weeks when they would be updated on what had happened; Mel said people kept telling her that no one stays pregnant forever, that she was not sure she believed them, and that she would let them know.
