Mark Scarborough
Mark's first turn in the co-host seat. He is questioned about how he talked his way into the Channel 5 News Crew, hearing about the podcast through Will Barlow's post in the Canberra parkrun group, then beating the hosts' Wilson Index challenge, first at his home parkrun Gungahlin and then at Jindabyne after the co-host tried to move the goalposts. Also covers his unofficial 150th parkrun at Gungahlin, why he isn't streaking (marathon training), and his charity work: ambassador for Danaer's Rainbow paediatric brain tumour research fund, running City to Surf with Danaer's brother Jarrett for the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation, an ambassadorship for the Stromlo Running Festival, and his #dadbodrunner tag.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:23
Melissa Erbacher hosting episode 175, noting the episode count is only ten ahead of her own tally of parkruns, and introducing Channel 5 News crew newest recruit Mark Scarborough as her co-host.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 15:37
The crew's contributions this week: Lyndell Murray from Harris Avenue parkrun (Narangba, SE Queensland) at its fourth event, interviewing Katie's family, adventurer listeners Erica and Ryan, and ED Tony; and Paul Kitching (PK) with an impromptu report from Pakapakanthi parkrun in Adelaide, where the MFS fire crew volunteered and the event fell seven finishers short of its 10,000th participant. The episode is also framed around the crew: newest recruit Mark Scarborough guest co-hosts, and the co-host recaps the reports, closing "I do feel truly blessed to have the Channel 5 News crew on hand to co-host with me every week."
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 26:43
The non-Channel-5 reports, explicitly distinguished by the co-host "it wasn't just Channel 5 News crew we had on the roving reports this week": Steve Marston from Wangaratta parkrun in north-east Victoria with two six- and first-timers through a hailstorm; Melissa Ellis from Studley parkrun in Victoria interviewing Jacqui O'Connell on her and Tony's 100th different event; and two international reports, Pippa White's first-ever overseas report from Queen Elizabeth parkrun in Hampshire, UK (with her daughter Harriet), and David Moss from The Eden Project parkrun in Cornwall.
Tribute starts at 56:30
Tribute to two Victorian parkrun community members lost to cancer in recent weeks. Naomi Phillips (parkrunner A2023488) of Hamilton parkrun, honoured at a 21 September event where participants wore red for the pride she took in joining the 50 Club. And Allan Hoskins, founding Event Director of Portland parkrun, who first ran at Hamilton's launch on 10/10/2015 finishing 15th in 22:10, launched Portland parkrun in May 2016 and went on to support the Warrnambool and Port Fairy launches; Portland held a tribute event on 28 September asking people to wear their footy colours. The Portland words read on air are credited to Diane Barrera of Hamilton parkrun.
Streaky September starts at 1:07:47
Weekly progress update from the co-host, who is still streaking. Shout-outs to Heather Hunter and Mel Alderton (both streaking, both recently joined the Pirate Club), Mel Alderton's Streaky Bingo Strava art of a snail with a spiral shell, Therese Marty's eight-to-nine-kilometre Strava-art house with windows, and a listener on day 21 recording her longest streak to date. Streaky Bingo also drives the episode's title bit: one tile is 'have a parkrun adventure', which is why the co-host and Pippa White ran twinned Queen Elizabeth parkruns in queen costumes on opposite sides of the globe, and Mark Scarborough is set a Streaky Bingo gnome selfie with Canberra's Pink Floyd.
Sign-off starts at 1:11:13
Mel told Mark she had had so much fun and that there was a reason the Channel 5 News crew are the Channel 5 News crew, thanked him for joining her again, said she felt truly blessed to have the crew on hand to co-host every week and that she enjoyed his roving reports, wished him luck with his marathon training and let his not streaking through September slide rather than count it a sackable offence. Mark thanked her for the opportunity, said he had thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Channel 5 News crew and looked forward to participating more, and wished everybody heading out for parkrun day the best of luck.
