Record-breaking over the marathon distance: Eliud Kipchoge's sub-two-hour INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna and Brigid Kosgei's women's world record in Chicago, whether the two performances should be compared, how pacing works in legal races versus the 1:59 attempt (and the four Australian pacers), Robbo's photo giving Kipchoge an inflatable kangaroo at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Lauren Parker's paratriathlon world title in Lausanne, Robbo's own Melbourne Marathon half-marathon PB, and the shoe-technology debate.
Roving reports
In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:23
Melissa Erbacher with Gary Murphy, both inspired by a big marathon weekend. Gary was at Lalor parkrun, where the event team rerouted the course after the council closed the rusty bridge for pathworks, then went on to a trial run of the new Aurora event (flat, friendly, fun, fantastic and a four-lapper); Mel run directed a rain-thinned Kawana (73 finishers against 205 the week before) with PB weather and one brand-new parkrunner. They close on the Melbourne Marathon, Eliud Kipchoge's INEOS 1:59, Brigid Kosgei's world record in Chicago and Channel 5 News crew member Mark Scarborough's first marathon in 5:20:08.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 33:07
The full roving-report block, five reports run back to back. TOC at Wyndham Vale parkrun (Victoria) interviews Run Director Loretto and the event's first two 250-milestone runners, Cheryl and Irene, with cake laid on; Mark Scarborough at Parkville parkrun (Melbourne) catches adventurers in town for the Melbourne Marathon Festival, including guest Dave 'Robbo' Robertson, Shirley Dahl and Sandy; Greta at Clare Valley parkrun (South Australia) interviews regular Julie and Co-Event Directors Cathy and Sharon, with a second junior report from Jess interviewing Cain; Cameron Drake at Bibra Lake parkrun (WA) interviews Dylan and Chris, volunteer Matt, and the On My Feet charity trio running 24 parkruns in 24 hours all sub-24 minutes; and Lyndell Murray files a deliberately short 'roving report light' from South Bank, Brisbane, with no interviews because rain kept the scan queue empty. The hosts recap the lot, noting it was Cameron's third report and that he is due a challenge to earn his ID badge and mic.
parkrun adventure challenge starts at 1:08:56listener challenge
Prompted by the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, Mel sets herself and the listeners a challenge: pick Kipchoge's or Kosgei's average kilometre pace (2 minutes 50 seconds, or 3 minutes 18 seconds) and see how much of anything you can do in that window. Having ruled out running and cycling, she settles on hot-glue-gunning pom-poms to felt, and invites adventurers to share their own attempts, "It doesn't matter if it's bizarre, crazy. In fact, the more insane, the better", to the Facebook page, with Gary suggesting it could run as a streak-to-New-Year's-Day challenge.
International Ugly Christmas Singlet Day starts at 1:15:21
Gary asks "what is the word on the street about the Christmas singlets for this year?" Mel reports the 2019 design is mid-stitching, may be released before episode 180, and confirms the one piece of feedback she has acted on: "Last year, people said there needed to be more pineapples. So the people have spoken and we have come to the party."
Sign-off starts at 1:16:57
Mel said she needed to get back to finishing her singlet designing so they had better wrap it up, thanked Gary for coming back to join her, called it a fun episode and said he was such a pro now that it was always a pleasure to have him on. Gary said the pleasure was all his, thanked her for having him on as co-host again and wished all the parkrun adventurers out there happy parkrunning and happy adventuring.
