Welcome starts at 0:02
Ollie Spake opens with an acknowledgement of the Wurundjeri and Dharawal people, then hosts from Dharawal Country with Melissa Ellis on Wurundjeri Country. Ollie is bunkered in from rain and storms, hoping not to lose power, while Mel reports a fine sunny day in Melton and notes Queensland and the west are also copping wild weather.
parkrun news bulletin starts at 2:06
Ollie "Let's jump straight to the news. Why not? Because it is in Australia National Reconciliation Week." The item is National Reconciliation Week rather than parkrun operational news: the 2022 theme "Be Brave, Make Change", an acknowledgement of volunteers who include an Acknowledgement of Country in the run brief, and Melissa "I have had feedback in the past that that welcome to country does make a difference for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders when visiting parkrun events." Runs to about.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 12:37
Three reports this week plus a post-outro clip. (1) Sam Schroder, 00:12:37-00:13:52, timekeeping at Shellharbour parkrun in National Volunteer Week and needling Ollie by naming the event eight times, which earns eight fines. (2) Melissa Ellis herself, 00:18:15-00:23:05, at the very new Panboola Wetlands parkrun near Pambula NSW, interviewing ED/RD Peter and visiting tourist Alan - thrown to "might be a good time for us to throw to our roving reports." (3) Tracey Wood, 00:23:08-00:27:54, at Elliott Heads Beach parkrun in 24-25km/h wind and rain, interviewing ED Barb and Tail Walker Brian. (4) A post-outro clip from junior RD Abigail at 00:56:15. Ollie closes the block "And thank you to our roving reports from, well, you, Mel. And Tracy [Tracey] at Elliott Heads Beach."
Emails starts at 28:36
One email, from Tracey Wood, read by Ollie-. She is glad the hosts liked the FROND meaning she coined the previous week, but clarifies - to head off a fine for stealing a friend's idea - that she did not coin the term "Nancy" and its ownership is unknown. She then asks whether a parkrun lingo handbook exists and volunteers to start one, asking how to receive contributions and where to host the document. The hosts discuss it: listeners can message or email contributions, Ollie recalls David Crook's parkrun lingo in "Every Saturday", and the running gag lands "Maybe we need a spreadsheet" / "Who do we know that's good with spreadsheets?" / "Who's got a really big spreadsheet?"
Dazza's starts at 31:17
Dazza's election-day prompt: "it's election day in Australia. Did your parkrun adventurer include a side trip for a democracy sausage?" Nine check-ins: Michael Gentle at the new Southern Highlands Botanical Gardens event (jokingly "outer Shellharbour" - three fines for Ollie, plus one for Michael's backwards flag); Dave Allmark, Fibonacci number 377, with an autumn-leaves photo; Brendan Schollery volunteering in Victoria, tracked down by the hosts to Wangaratta parkrun from the photo; Melanie McGregor in New Zealand, four of them travelling from Greytown Woodside Trail to Russell Park parkrun for her Wilson Index number seven; Adrian Hillyer, late start and no coffee; Tony O'Connell (Channel 5 News Crew) regaining statespeople with Jack at Werribee Mansion, thanking John Fox for holding the flag the right way round; Chris Gore and Karen Gore, touristing streak number five at Renmark parkrun, Chris's fastest time of the year, another R for Karen's namely challenge; Cass Castleton, sixth alphabet at Yamba after Yowie was cancelled by flooding, joined by Tony Jennings; Johan Duvenhage in South Africa at his home event's fifth anniversary, complete with sausage sizzle; Calum Burrell in the UK marshalling at Duck Poo Corner at Bramhall parkrun with Christine Imbert, fined for a backwards sign; and Renee Jackson at juniors, reporting Abigail's RD debut.
the Obi Award — Abigail ("Abby") — junior parkrun Run Director starts at 41:28
The envelope bit "So do we have staff in the office preparing envelopes this week, Ollie?" - blue with a bit of silver. Ollie announces "the Obi [Obi] this week goes to none other than the newest juniors RD, Abby", with Melissa adding "Well done, Abby" and "You still have to pay your dollar, though." Awarded for her debut as Run Director at junior parkrun, where she ran the volunteer brief and marked off the volunteers.
the Informant starts at 42:52
The Informant returns after missing the previous week with COVID (which left ep285 with a music filler in this slot). 437 events down under, down 9; 400 Australia, 37 New Zealand; 1,710 worldwide, down 47; Aussie/NZ attendance down 8,363 to 29,823; worldwide attendance down 19,000; two launches, Japan and South Africa. 3,958 PBs, 1,265 first-timers; 57 Junior 10s, 127 fifties, 73 hundreds, 28 two-fifties; 12 bingos; Carolyn Southwell quickest on 172 runs, Tanya Ritchie slowest on 301. 13 new statespeople (nine ACT, three SA, one Victoria). Neil Scott to equal 15 on the most-events list after his 160th location at Port Sorell; Russell Waugh up 10 to 176 on his 93rd event. 85 Wilson Indexes, biggest mover Lorraine Mayfield up 23 to 62. In the adventurer Challenges: no Peels, two cow clubbers (Danny Rigoni, Fiona Edmonds), one half rein and five half cows. He then admits that his opening comparisons were against two weeks ago "on account of the sickie last week" and declares it intentional.
Consolidated Club Report starts at 46:26
195 club members as of the previous Saturday, 150 taking part at 91 different locations. 17 UK events (Bramhall, Woodbank, Bath Skyline, Pontefract, Lloyd/Croydon, Southwick Country, Sewerby, Cheadle Hulme, Cirencester, Newborough Forest, Ross-on-Wye, Mallards Pike, Great Yarmouth, Itchen Valley, Greenfield Valley, Chopwell Wood, Durlston Country Park); two in South Africa; one in the USA (Jeff at Joe Creason); one in Germany (Friedrichsau). Domestically: 25 Victoria, 15 Queensland, 14 NSW, four each SA, WA and ACT, one Tasmania (Ollie at Geeveston), none NT, three North Island NZ and none South Island - so no bowling strike. The hosts attribute the lower numbers to adventurers volunteering, both at parkrun and at the federal election. Includes a shared comment from "Steve's bike" about a junior boy aiming for eight minutes, and Steve's edit praising the guest RD's volunteer briefing.
the Frond — Frond of seven at Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens (event 2): housemate Lance, Robin Rishworth, Beck Bailey, Michael Charlton, Paddy Shimo, Roberta Winters, Michael Gentle starts at 48:36
Melissa "But to bring up the largest frond, Ollie, it was at Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens with seven adventurers going to event number two" - housemate Lance, Robin Rishworth, Bec Bailey, Michael Charlton, Paddy Shimo, Roberta Winters and Michael Gentle. Reported inside the Consolidated Club Report, as usual.
International Ugly Christmas Singlet Day starts at 52:17
The show notes call this the episode's public service announcement. Ollie "we are live, Mel, International Ugly Christmas Singlet or Shirt Day. The post is up. The orders are live." Special-edition Ugly Christmas buffs (neck warmers) joining the existing swag, including the 2021 matchy platypus-and-echidna release and "our very own little Eynesbury Puddle Duck doing his zoomie". $1 from every buff sold goes to Beyond Blue. Ordering cutoff Wednesday 1 June 2022 - repeated as the episode's standing reminder.
Sign-off starts at 54:42
Mel asked who was signing out; Ollie said it had been wonderful to catch up once again, thanked Mel and everyone for joining them, gave the Facebook and email contacts and closed for another week.
