Sarah Hudson
The unpause of Byxbee parkrun after 68 weeks off - four events back, averaging around 30 finishers, lots of first-timers and local run clubs discovering it. Her parkrun journey from Curl Curl (Sydney) via a Halloween run, tail walking and photography as favourite volunteer roles, moving to Palo Alto in 2018, finding Crissy Field too far, teaming up with Sam Stowe and launching Byxbee in September 2019. The course in the Palo Alto Baylands and the change to a two-lap layout because the Tide Gate rebuild will close part of the trail. The difficulty of getting a permit for a weekly 5K in the USA, low parkrun awareness, and the shift from expat regulars to locals. Top three away events: Crissy Field, Taree and Albert Park.

In this episode
Welcome starts at 0:24
Ollie Spake and Melissa Ellis, both benched by lockdowns (Mel with a 5 km limit, Ollie 10 km, South Australia now restricted too). Mel's Brisbane trip to run New Farm with Tracey in a Tutu was cancelled by Victoria's snap lockdown, so she staged a German-themed Ellis Palaceparkrun with 92 of an intended 99 red balloons, black forest cake and a frothy German beer, marking Germany's return; Ollie managed German-flag-coloured shirts and beer glasses and got out for a sunriseparkrun and Bass Point. They thank TOC for joining Saturday's live and Danny Norman of With Me Now for mentoring ahead of next week's live cross for England's return, before Ollie's interview with Sarah Hudson from Byxbee in the USA.
Dazza's starts at 33:45
Ollie and Mel read out the week's listener posts from the Dazza's cafe thread. Contributors include Tanya, Brett, Bronwyn and Rebecca Bailey, M Scholarly, Sonja Pohlman (from The Beaches), Linda Coombes (250th at Warwick in her Jumpers and Jazz ugly jumper), Claire Stutchbury, Ingrid Botha, Tracy Wood (300th at New Farm), Val Warwick, Belinda Taylor, Tony O'Connell, Mark Scarborough (Peel Club at Cottesloe), Jack Corkill, Peter Leroux (South Africa), Alison King (Taupo), Bernadette Bennett (Newy), Janet Reid (Lochiel Park), Pippa White and Sam Schroder. Sonja's post sends Mel on a Wikipedia dive into Bienenstich (German bee sting cake), fitting the week's German theme.
Western Wanderers Challenge starts at 46:08
Mel gives an update on the Victorian Western Wanderers challenge: Adrian, the ED at Peppertree parkrun, has sent a photo of all qualifying events; Highlands parkrun has been added on the grounds that it sits west of the Hume Highway. Mel also warns the community that Williamstown Breakwater appears on the map but has never actually launched, so it cannot be ticked off.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 48:15
Ollie crosses to the week's recorded roving reports: Tracy Wood in a tutu from New Farm (Brisbane), Mark Scarborough and Cameron Drake from Cottesloe in Western Australia, and a guest report from Hannah at Bass Point not parkrun during the Greater Sydney lockdown.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 55:03
Mark Scarborough reports in for the Channel 5 News crew from Cottesloe parkrun (event 280), 2,405km on from the crew's last stop at Port Lincoln, and marks the Scarborough family completing Peel Club - a parkrun in every Australian state and territory. He interviews Cam, then covers a midweek Freedom Run at Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Later, at 01:13:33, the hosts revisit the crew in studio: they surveyed its members to set a challenge, joke about a potential new member and about the bar being lowered, and land on a challenge for Tracey - interview a parkrunner from every different volunteer role, with prior reports counting toward the list.
the Informant starts at 1:09:37

Sign-off starts at 1:16:33
Ollie said it had been a big episode with another big week to roll into and asked Mel what she was up to next week: she would be donning her ugly buffs and ugly Christmas runners and finding a way to virtually enjoy the inaugural Ugly Christmas in July on the 24th, which Ollie plugged with a reminder to sign up on the Facebook event and get creative if the buff had not arrived. Mel then flagged the other exciting thing that Saturday - the pair going live with the With Me Now podcast at about 5.30 Eastern Standard Time for the relaunch, or unpause, of England, possibly with a special guest, UK Dazza - and both thanked the With Me Now team for the invitation and for letting them practise on the platform. Ollie wished Mel a good week andparkrun day, mentioned the Olympics starting that Friday and the home Olympics under way in his household, gave the Facebook and email contact details, and signed off saying they would see everyone next week, or live on Saturday, for more adventures.
Ugly Christmas in July starts at 1:16:49
Promo for the inaugural Ugly Christmas in July, to be held on parkrun day 24 July 2021 - listeners are asked to dig out ugly festive attire and ugly buffs, sign up to the Facebook event, and take part however they can (walk, plod, amble, skip, run, Lego building or baking) given widespread lockdowns. Mel plans to wear her ugly Christmas runners.
