Welcome starts at 0:23
Simon Mackley on Quandamooka Country and Melissa Ellis on Wurundjeri Country, Mel back after a week off editing spent recording a guest spot on Danny Norman's With Me Now. Simon went to Cormorant Bay parkrun on Yuggera lands, a small all-trail course beside Wivenhoe Dam freshly graded after washouts, where he came second among 23 runners and walkers and met a camper-vanning tourist couple; Mel made her ninth visit to Peppertree hoping to spot the platypus seen in the Werribee River, spent Cup weekend clearing the shed, and is picking up a new four-wheel-drive parkrun mobile on Friday because the old Barina can no longer get into first gear.
Budgie update starts at 8:45
Melissa tracks the travelling mascot "Budgie" between adventurers: Bec Bailey handed it to Cathy Mudge at Lithgow parkrun, Cathy passed it to Heather Hunter at Forster parkrun, and Heather plans to take it to a state it has not visited. The hosts work out that Heather is joining the Whitemark Wharf trip, from where Sarah could carry Budgie back to WA and complete all six states.
Roving reports & the Channel 5 News crew starts at 16:39
Melissa throws to the roving reporters and Simon recaps them. Three reports run back to back, Lyndell Murray at Coomera (interviewing RD Megan), Sarah Jefferson at Esperance Foreshore (interviewing RD Tanya), Ali Sheppard at Baysgarth Park (interviewing RD Phil Kirkham). All three are framed as Channel 5 News Crew work, as the show notes also state, and the hosts say more reports are being held over to next week.
Dazza's starts at 42:09
Listener colour/dress-up posts read out: Sue Keane (Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, 50th location), Em Nico (Kirra, gave the first-timers briefing in police uniform), Gareth Arnold (Rockingham, WA), Martin Barrett with Andrew Johnston and Eric Banner (Goulburn River Trail, Seymour), Kristy Hill (Tuggeranong, ACT), Ian Thompson (Upton Court, UK), Ruth Perkins (Meijo koen, Nagoya, Japan), Rory Merritt (UK, V1000 hoodie) and Johan Duvenhage (Pine Forest, Free State, South Africa). The carried-over body-letter challenge drew no entries. Closes with a happy birthday to Channel 5 News Crew member Alison King.
the Obi Award — Heather Hunter starts at 50:34
Awarded jointly this week for keeping the travelling Budgie moving, passing it on at Lithgow and Forster and keeping listener interest in it going.
the Birthday Boy starts at 51:22
November 2024 anniversary rundown: 44 events across five weeks, week one and two events listed retrospectively, no junior events celebrating, three events turning 10 (Geographe Bay, Calamvale, The Beaches, the last celebrating in week four because of tides), week five's Minnippi, first anniversaries for Dhunggaarr Reserve (NSW) and Katherine Hot Springs (NT), an unnamed 13th anniversary for the third event to open in Australia, and six events turning seven. Reminds listeners to check event pages and the parkrun cancellations page.
Consolidated Club Report starts at 56:10
For Saturday 2 November 2024: of 706 members, 513 took part in nine countries across 269 locations, 56 events in the UK, six in South Africa, four in the USA, one each in Ireland, Italy, Japan and Singapore, plus the Australian and New Zealand state-by-state breakdown.
the Frond — Belton House frond of four — Helen Rutter, Andy Rutter, Nicola Stott, Ali Sheppard starts at 57:00
International frond of four at Belton House in the UK (Helen Rutter, Andy Rutter, Nicola Stott and Ali Sheppard, who was celebrating her 250th parkrun after 11 years). No adventurers at Bushy this week. Largest Australia/New Zealand fronds were nine at three events, with Cottesloe highlighted (Matthew Stevens, Chris Carvell, Chris Jones, Andrew Yeatman, Janet Changwony and others).
Launches and anniversaries starts at 59:07"Where is the cake?"
Two weeks of launches covered: White Lick Creek (Indiana, USA), Bundoran Promenade (County Donegal, Ireland), Kai Kai (Paul Roux area near Port Nolloth, South Africa), Simmons Park (Okehampton, UK), Pferdebachtal (Dortmund, Germany, with a German course description read by Sarah Jantscher), Pine Forest (Free State, South Africa) and Kleinevalleij (near Paarl, South Africa). The hosts note there were no Australian launches.
parkrun adventure challenge starts at 1:04:12listener challenge
New challenge set after the previous body-letter challenge drew no entries: work the name of a previous Melbourne Cup winning horse into your Dazza's post. The hosts note there is a parkrun named after a Melbourne Cup winner among Simon's own local events, and that it is often mispronounced.
International Ugly Christmas Singlet Day starts at 1:05:10
Look-ahead item: a second round of the Ugly Christmas Singlet and shirt orders has opened for anyone who missed the first, with the hosts reminding listeners the shirts are made by a third party and questions go to that page, not the podcast.
Sign-off starts at 1:07:48
Simon turned to what they were looking forward to and Mel flagged that a second round of the Ugly Christmas Singlet and Shirt Day shirt portal had opened, directing questions to that page rather than to the pod. Both were undecided about next parkrun day: Mel somewhere within about 45 minutes of Melton with Dave because she had to be across town for lunch, possibly revealing her new car's number plates in Dazza's; Simon choosing between Scribbly Gum for his p-index and Underwood for his re-index, and promising to wear his adventurers shirt. Mel said TOC would be back next week after running a marathon and then a 60 km event on consecutive days at Portland, apologised for the dog Lucy whining at the office door, thanked Simon and gave the contacts.
