Talked to at their parkrun
Episode 357
How Kawana was chosen over Moffat Beach because it has no road crossings, and the origin of the 500-metre walk from the meeting point to the start - the first week's course measured five and a half kilometres, so a runner with a measuring wheel re-measured it and the start was moved rather than lose the lighthouse loop. Also the upcoming wedding of two people who met at the event.
Interviewed as a guest
Episode 159
Winter nutrition and hydration for parkrunners: the hibernation urge, comfort eating versus unchanged nutritional needs when exercise drops off, roughly 1.5 litres of fluid a day in winter, and which warm drinks count toward fluid intake (rooibos, honeybush, herbal and fruit teas) versus caffeinated coffee and tea, which are diuretic.
Episode 136
Nuts as a snack (varieties, fats, portion size), a homemade raw chocolate recipe, antioxidants and free radicals, fermented foods and gut health including kombucha; plus running through pregnancy at 34 weeks.
Episode 122
Post-parkrun drink choices, freshly squeezed vs store-bought juice, milk-based coffees and hot chocolates, and non-dairy milk alternatives, followed by protein: its role for runners and non-runners, why protein powders are nutritionally incomplete compared with real food, portion sizing, and getting enough protein on a vegetarian diet.
Episode 102
Sports drinks vs water and coconut water, electrolytes and hyponatremia, magnesium for post-run and overnight cramping, and post-run recovery nutrition - her 'three R's' (rehydrate, replenish, repair) plus electrolytes, a homemade Gatorade recipe and quick recovery-snack examples.
Episode 90
Listener nutrition questions - coconut oil and saturated fat, serving vs portion, eating before a run, and whether people running to lose weight should cut carbs.
Episode 83
Introduced as a new semi-regular nutrition contributor, her parkrun origin story (started Kawana in 2012 with Tim Oberg), UK/Ireland parkrun tourism, and nutrition Q&A on carb loading, doughnuts and low-carb/high-fat diets.
